This ending makes no sense, here's what should have happened.

What should have happened:

The kid tells his mom at the last minute that he's working a job at the water park, so she agrees to stay there with him for the rest of the summer while Trent and his daughter leaves. That would have been perfect. But instead it showed them sucking up to Trent.

That's debatable. Some people believe that Pam's move to the way way back of the station wagon was an indication she wasn't going to continue putting up with Trent's crap. I like to think that Pam and Duncan got their own transportation and went back.

*Possible spoiler alert*
In my mind, getting into the back meant joining Duncan. They return to the beach for good. And I thought I felt a spark between Pam and Owen. If I am not given a definite ending, everyone lives happily ever after. In this movie, that cannot include Steve Carell. Odd experience, not liking his character.

I think he's married or atleast in a deep relationship with the Maya Rudolph character.

They can't stay at the beach. The cabin belong to Trent. The ending was perfect the way it was

Its all in the double entendre of the title...The mom was lost after the divorce...so she sacrificed herself to date Trent...which gave the kid a father figure and her a man.

But it didn't work...and she was lost.

When she saw how her son had become a man at the water park she needed to find her own way back.

So by climbing into the way way back she found her own way back. (to whom she used to be or wanted to be)

Great answer, Asherp. This movie shows what a great actor Steve Carell is, his character wasn't the worst person ever, but he came very close.

They will never return to the beach. They're poor white trash, and they cannot afford it. She has no job, much less one where she can afford to move them to the beach.

Say, do you hear that? It's the sound of the Reaper.....

reply

She owned her own catering business. I think that would be considered a job.
