Possible Molestation...

I'm not trying to start a big thing or troll anybody, but during the movie I began to wonder if maybe Trent had an unhealthy relationship with his daughter Stephanie. She mentions that he only sees her twice a year, but never wants to be alone with him. Her attitude may just be because she's a teenager, but when she was sitting on the steps and says she has "a lot going on in her life", it struck me as weird. Did anyone else maybe think of this?

Umm. No.

In fact Toni Colette asks her not two minutes later how such-and-such is and she responds "We broke up". So I think we can assume that's what she was referring to.

No.

Umm... No. Not at all.

The moment she said that comment about her life, the camera switches over to the vacant parking spot. This shows that she was upset that her father disappeared. She was now stuck with two people she could not stand. Or it could have been the opposite. Maybe she really liked her new family members and was scared that it was about to end.

The anger was her just being a typical teenager where everything sucks with no mention of the positive things in her life. So we never know what it is actually important to her until it's gone. In this case her friend and possible future step brother. She will never admit that she needs them in her life. She needs to be the center of attention and was upset that two people had a great time without her. She could not let them know she missed them, so she tricked them into thinking they left her in a time of crisis.

Nope, didn't cross my mind. Maybe some wishful thinking on your behalf? Maybe triggered an old memory?

reply

Not at all. She was bummed her boyfriend dumped her and that she's stuck with her dad's girlfriend and son, instead of getting drunk with her boyfriend on the beach.
