Why all the chicks on the beach stereotypes? Acting bitchy and all that

In the first part of the movie, cant quite remember what minute, the kid and his sister or half sister go to beach and the sister and those chick friends are acting all bitchy, making fun of the kid and just generally annoying. Is it american thing or what? Cause i dont see really that type of behaving in europe so much. They seemed SO stereotypical.

Yea, that's a pretty standard "awkward teenager eventually finds acceptance" movie cliché. John Cusack built his career on that in the 80s.

I don't think the beach scenes would have worked had they been filmed with studious, plus-sized women in their late 50's. I just don't.

reply

I think the point was their bitchy disposition and not their age and weight.

I didn't see anything wrong with the 'mean girl' clique. Generally, people tend to associate with those that share their own interests, especially at younger ages. It really helped show how Susanna was maturing as a young woman and made it believable that she could really empathize with Duncan.

I'm not sure I would buy it if one of the shallow beach bunnies would have dumped her star quarterback boyfriend to hang with Duncan.

But that's me; I'm a simpleton.

Sorry, but it's the way girls of a certain temperament and age really act and talk.

I witnessed a display very like this once on a ski trip in which a sister and her best friend undermined and made miserable her brother's poor girlfriend; they were all within a year of being the same age, late teens. Those girls were absolute b*tches to the girlfriend, who was a nice kid, and I was never so glad, seeing that behavior, that I had boys!

I saw the same thing when I lived at the beach. A couple of girls I knew (one resembled Steph) didn't act like that, but some of their friends did.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

reply

Steph was the alpha female...or queen bee if you rather. She was the stereotypical stuck up bitch, no doubt probably inpart because Trent let her get away with everything.

It isn't that unusual for other girls to just follow along that queen bee, and join in any mean girl act she is expressing. Those other girls might've been nicer had Duncan encounter them alone.

As for Susanna & Steph, i'm assuming they were good friends when they were kids. Steph & her probably rode bikes together, that Duncan now rides. As Steph & Susanna got older they grew apart, but it wasn't until this summer with Duncan did Susanna finally decided to ditch following Steph

I thought that was what American girls are like?

reply

During the beach scene, I literally said "thank God I never had friends like that!"
There's always going to be bitchy mean girls, particularly if they're rich and spoiled (by rich, spoiled parents... Seriously, what grownup [that's not a teacher or stay at home dad] can take off the summer??

The neighbor girl didn't want to be friends with the shallow bitches anymore, so she was curious by this new person that wasn't a shallow bitch. The fact that he turned slightly cute and more confident made her curious. It's not entirely ridiculous.

No. Not all American teen girls are bitches. Of course not. Nor are we all coastal beach bunnies :)

reply

An American thing? Yes, across the entire planet, only American teenagers are ass holes. F-cking idiot.

They were suppose to be stereotypical mean girl clinches types. Though the actresses were all terrible in my opinion. I'm glad the Steph character didn't get many lines.
