Why was Susanna all over Duncan?

For a movie that's supposed to be about a shy boy, he seemed pretty freakin' lucky that a gorgeous girl like Susanna practically drooled over him, even though he barely said a word to her. Yeah okay they sympathized each others situations, that only carries so far...

Suzanna wasn't thrilled to hang out with Steph and her shallow friends and she probably hoped Duncan would be better company than they were. She discovered she enjoyed hanging out with him. Duncan and Suzanna are pretty comparable in the looks department.

He wasn't even in the same ballpark as her. Not even the same league. Hell, he wasn't even playing the same sport. He isn't... Okay you get the idea. For the first half of the movie I wasn't sure if he had downssyndrome or not. She's right off the bat a looker. Even when his hair wasn't combed by his mom I still questioned his mental faculties.

It made no sense to me why she showed so much interest as well. Like you said, mutual understanding only goes so far. They tried to portray her as a bookworm an intellectual of sorts, but even that doesn't cut it.

Sort of... Susanna wasn't a person to consider partying and bullying a fix for being in a location and around people she didn't favor. If you're implying that those characteristics equate to a higher intelligence, I don't disagree.

Anyway, as hka-3 stated
Suzanna wasn't thrilled to hang out with Steph and her shallow friends and she probably hoped Duncan would be better company than they were.

Duncan and Susanna were in relatable situations, which they mutually complained about but never to a degree annoying to one another, though there were several awkward moments. Additionally, Susanna had the comfort of Duncan's shy boy syndrome, i.e., Susanna had no problem being openly and even sometimes eagerly friendly towards Duncan because she didn't think he would make a 'move' due to his blatant timidness -- although, that did eventually occur. In other words, a girl or girls aren't often afraid of being carefree and perhaps even a little affectionate around bashful guys thanks to their lack of aggressive/controlling behavior.

Her falling for him is not bad. I could see it happening after getting to know someone.

Keep in mind she had to be attractive enough to be believable as one of Steph's friends--or at least someone Steph would want to hang out with--and one gets the sense that in Summer's past they were much closer. Susanna's attitude toward Steph and her friends seems to be a recent development. Perhaps driven by maturity or her struggles with her parents divorce.

Lol Duncan is cute, why wouldn't she?.

reply

uh actually he is quite cute. lots of girls go for the introverted type and not the douchey type. you seem to be the latter so you wouldn't really understand.

reply

He is a cute boy and she is a cute girl. He didn't talk much, but it didn't feel like either of them was too uncomfortable because of it, in fact she seemed really comfortable around him.

reply

he was a scrawny, moping kid with a weird looking face (like he's constipated) and he has a crap attitude.

She was a smokehouse.

As has been said, she's not only out of his league, they're in different sports.

Say, do you hear that? It's the sound of the Reaper.....

it was a ****ty movie, thats' why

there was a deeper connection that they both had father figures that they wanted to be present in their lives but didnt want to be present in theirs. I guess he also wasn't trying to get into her pants as she was probably used to and she might have found this endearing...sometimes we fall for the person not the face

reply

Ah did we miss when they first met? She hardly seemed interested in him or physically attracted to him. She started to show interest because one she was bored with her shallow friends and two she could relate to his situation. Duncan also became more and more comfortable in his skin as a result of hanging out with Owen. Duncan is a awkward looking kid, but it isn't unlikely that a pretty girl would grow to like him, especially given the environment.. Susanna showing interest in Duncan displays her maturity, I think if this had happened in previous summers she would have went along with Steph.

reply

HAHA! You think she was "drooling" over him? Are you a guy who thinks any girl who is nice to you is in love with you?

You're right, she wasn't drooling. Their interaction was pretty innocent and platonic most of the time.

When I was a kid/teenager I was a Susanna type and made friends with my male and female neighbors whenever we rented cabins or campsites in the summer and I didn't care what the kids looked like. Sometimes there were kids like Duncan who were awkward or simply didn't warm up to new people very quickly. I could always find something that we had in common, such as music or some sports activity that we could enjoy together. Before I knew it we were hanging out together on a regular basis. It was way better than being alone or sitting around listening to the adults all the time.

In that one scene when Susanna and her mother are yelling at each other and Susanna walks out onto her porch and sees Duncan there, it bugs me that she didn't grab a couple of lawn chairs, put them between their two houses and invite him to sit with her while they listened to her iPod, or something like that. That's what I would've done. I wouldn't have left him there feeling awkward.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

reply

Wow some super shallow people here. So sad.

She wasn't "all over" Duncan. If you'll remember, it was Duncan who first tried to kiss her and she refrained. Susanna simply didn't want to hang with Steph & her shallow friends and found a worthy companion (friend) in Duncan, who was basically in the same situation as her. It wasn't till the very end that she kisses him on the cheek, which showed that potential romantic feelings were starting to emerge.
