why i love this movie

Wow after getting done watching this movie i had a weird feeling of utter joy yet sadness that i dont get easily after watching a movie. After hearing the synopsis for this movie you would think it would just be a generic coming of age story but yet this one is different. Now i usually hate these types of movies as i think generally theres a ceiling on how good a coming of age movie can be. What sets this one apart is 2 things. 1. The cast is absolutely amazing and they all play against type so well. Steve Carrell got me to despise him so much yet i see people like him everyday and dont bat a eye. Sam rockwell is amazing and his relationship with maya Rudolphs character is so genuine. Toni collete is also great here. You can see in every scene shes in of how conflicted she is about her son and what's right for her to do. Every one is great. 2. With most coming of age stories it ends on a totally happy note where the boy gets the girl and learns the lessons he needs too yada yada. But here theres an underlying sense of melancholy here. It makes it feel real not like a movie. He spends this whole summer making memories, figuring out who he is, making friends, meeting a girl he likes and what does he have in the end? Just the memories and in one of the most sweet moments his mom. He has to leave everything but he knows who he is now. I think thats why i love it, because it doesnt tell a story about a boy, it tells a story about life.

Perfectly said. I love this movie too. It's got warmth, nostalgia and bittersweet sadness all at once. It seems to stand apart from other family films and I don't know why. It's definitely a special piece of cinema.
