Yikes! Steve Carrell plays a good dick, or he really is one.....

Based on the comments about him in the trivia section, how well he plays an ass and his dead comedian eyes, I am getting worried that Steve Carrell is really like this in real life. Since I have become a fan, it would be a disappointment. Unfortunately, comics, both male and female, all have that same dead look in their eyes, and often turn out to be unbearable to spend much time around from what I understand (unless you have a REALLY thick skin).

I was under the impression that he was just really versatile -- although I'm mostly interested in seeing his more serious roles. Your post makes me want to check out some of his interviews on youtube. I've seen an interview or two of his before, but wasn't thinking, "Is he a dick or isn't he?" lol

I've heard he was sort of a dick with women he dated when he was about 25, but not too bad, and he has got nicer and nicer over the years since then. So maybe he just _remembers_ how to be a dick.

Really nice guys play good dicks. It's unnerving because if the character is plain cruel it's easy to pigeon hole them as evil, but when good people are doing bad things it feels genuinely worrying.

I have strong feelings that this is his real persona. He WAS the character. He did not have a false moment in all that bastardness. I can see him doing a remake of Night of the Hunter.

His job is to ACT and BECOME different CHARACTERS, and you have "strong feelings" that this is really him? Why did you not have the same feelings about Michael Scott, or the freak he played in Dinner for Schmucks?

By all accounts Steve Carrell is one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.
It's very strange how people react to strong a-hole performances. Lena Headey gets like death threats due to her portrayal of Cersei Lannister, and that show doesn't even take place on this planet.

It was a great performance of a terrible person, nothing more

people, its A MOVIE. and everyone was a dick in it. for every dick he plays, there are 5 others where he plays a friendly idiot.

He played a great dick in this movie. One of the first times I've seen him play this role and he did well.

No, he's just a good actor. See Dan in Real Life or Crazy, Stupid, Love for examples of his acting skills -- both roles are a complete 180 from the Trent character.

SO a guy plays 3000 goofy nice characters and one bad guy and you're all, "HE'S REALLY LIKE THIS!"

You need to see more movies.

I think some of the nicest actors play great dicks on-screen. One of my favorites is Charles Grodin.

I'm also a huge fan of Steve Carrell and I think he seems like a genuinely nice guy in real life. It's one reason he's one of my favorites.
