He's exactly that guy we all date in our 20's once before we learn out lesson. I disagree with you about his looks and charm. I think he's got sex appeal and is extremely charming in a playful, boyish way that made Hannah feel carefree and 'cool' for being with him. He's also extremely kind in spirit. And he's serious, crazy, artsy and talented and he ignored her...but gave her just enough attention that she was hooked.
The issue is that they're just not compatible. He's intense and kinky and can be emotionally withholding when he gets mad. She's kind of vanilla where sex is concerned (which is fine - most people would not be down with the stuff Adam is into), extremely needy and needs constant validation. He expects her to care about things like he does, but she's not capable, because she's a narcissist. And Adam is emotionally manipulative, because he knows where her weak spots are and exploits them, making her feel insecure when he wants to put her off-kilter. And he's equally as selfish as she is, just not as self-centered (he's capable of having a discussion that isn't about him).
I totally get why she dated him, but those are not the guys you marry...not until they grow up and get over their delusions. But those men are the best in bed, honestly.
