Pointless, excessive Lena nudity

I get that Lena is trying to make chubby the new sexy and she is comfortable in her own skin, but her excessive nudity scenes and skimpy outfits over the years on this show is too much. It's distracting from the acting, and not in a good way. Nobody goes around nude that much or wears an unflattering bikini at a beach house the ENTIRE time when even the gay ensemble are more dressed than she is. The most awkward nude episode was when she had that Josh ('it's Joshua!") affair with the doctor in the brownstone in season two. Playing Ping-Pong in the nude then breaking down in his shower sobbing that she just wants to be happy (uh, who doesn't?)!! I don't get what Lena is trying to prove or convey with her gratuitous and excessive nudity that only she seems to get off on. Even Jenna Jameson and porn stars know when to dress and undress.

She clearly is not comfortable in her skin as she has spoken publicly about how she feels ugly and overweight. The excessive nudity is to fill a niche for viewers. It's the first time it's been done in a cable network show and she feels she is groundbreaking.

I have always thought she was unattractive, but now consider her average. She isn't ugly, she's ordinary. Like the girl next door.

I've been taking nighttime life drawing classes for the past 6 weeks. (I'm still really crap at it).

But it's made me keenly aware of how weird it is to see a variety of nude female bodies (or even partially nude) - dudes, we see quite a bit of variety in comparison, particularly in comedies. Anyway I've really started noticing how virtually all advertising, acting, even music, features 'one type of woman's body' with no 'flaws' or differences.

Drawing different bodies for a bunch of weeks, and really focusing on them, I mean, I don't know if I can say what I'm trying to say here. Basically, regardless of however I feel about LD (and she's problematic) I'm absolutely ALL FOR LD's nude body being all over my TV screen. I find it fricking refreshing to see someone with a non-perfect body on TV. It's realistic, and I guess it's also pretty confronting because we're not used to it. You don't have to watch it - even if you still want to watch the show you don't have to watch it (I cover my eyes for those scenes in nature docs where the lions tear open the deer) so yeah, just cover your eyes if it offends you, whatever. I have zero issues with her gratuitous nudity. Bring it on I say.

WOW Shiny, you ARE so astute. You are just now noticing this??

Also, it's not refreshing. Lena is a narcissist. I feel like this was supposed to be poignant, but it just didn't work.

I've just rewatched seasons 1-3 and noticed that it is much more excessive in season 3. The first two seasons it was thrown in here and there but wasn't completely uncalled for. Then comes season 3 and it feels like her nudity is being thrown on your face merely for shock value and as if to say "LOOK AT ME!! LOOK HOW SHOCKING I AM!!". Well at least that's how it appears to me. It also is worth noting that Hannah's personality becomes a lot less likable in season 3 as well.

She does interviews saying how she doesn't like being naked and this and that. Yet she chooses and wants to be naked in everything. Even her indie movies she's naked all the time. And many times the nudity is not needed in any way and would have worked the same or better with a shirt on.

hold on. are you saying dunham is a hopelessly confused hypocrite?

reply

^Exactly. That's why it's called Hollyweird.

If it weren't for her getting nude, I wouldn't know who she is

reply

Hypocrisy is far from unique to "Hollyweird", and in any case Lena is more prominent in the social/entertainment scene of NYC than she is in Hollywood.

reply

Then even the episodes she directs herself she is more naked in those episodes then others.
It's like she forces it on us when it's not needed half the time

reply

Maybe she is an exhibitionist.s
