Anyone else confused by this new character? He is just an alcoholic that used to be the star quarterback - why was he in this movie? He wasn’t funny or interesting at all .. very odd move to put him in this movie
I think he was here just because the writer(s) and director thought he was funny. Apparently you do not agree with them.
Maybe they also felt like, being that we're flashing forward decades into the future, they needed to populate the town with a few unfamiliar faces, and that introducing new characters would keep things fresh.
I guess so but I’m thinking they shot more scenes with the football character and ended up trimming them. The character just felt pointless and a strange fit for this movie
the ex-quarterback character is a staple trope in "returning to the town i grew up in" movies. usually to show a character who clearly peaked in high school, and it's used a comparison point to show the main character's own growth.
That makes sense. Also, the character and the reference to high school helps fill in the years between Ralphie's early childhood and his becoming an adult.
