Ok I'm going to ask ...

I have never seen this show, but can someone please answer this question. How do these women do it? I can not imagine a woman sharing her husband with not only 1 other woman but 3 others. And openly. Does he pick who he has sex with, and you can't tell me there is no jealousy involved. And secondly, how does he support all of the kids. If it weren't for this show, would they all be on welfare? Like the polygamous families that don't have tv shows?

reply

How do these women do it?
They consider it part of their religion.
Does he pick who he has sex with
He rotates nights with each wife.
you can't tell me there is no jealousy involved
There is a lot of jealousy involved.
how does he support all of the kids.
Mainly the show.
If it weren't for this show, would they all be on welfare?
Probably partially.
Like the polygamous families that don't have tv shows?
Not all polygamous families rely on the government, but probably quite a few. There are other families like the Browns who work hard like the Darger's. The Browns didn't always rely on the government and they did work before the show.

I don't understand how a woman could allow herself to be subjugated like that. And to bring up your children to believe that it is ok. You can not have a truly fulfilling, loving, intimate relationship with someone when you know he is in the next room screwing someone else, and couldn't care less that he is hurting you. And to say it is a religious belief, I think that is *beep* It's has all to do with control.

reply

People have many opinions why they do it, but their reasoning is that it is part of their religion. I think the show is good. You should watch an episode.

I know I may be sounding opinionated. But it's there lifestyle and if it works for them, great. It may be publicity, but the things I have heard about the show, the women look and sound like they are all miserably unhappy.

reply

It's a reality show which by nature generates drama and opinion. If everything was perfect with them, no one would watch. Do you know any reality show where everyone is happy all the time? Watch the show - then you can see first hand.

reply

Simple: religion. a person will do anything if they think God wants them to do it.

I watched the HBO series Big Love and I was curious about a "real-life" polygamous family, so I've watched the series from the beginning. From what I've read online, most of the wives and Kody have filed bankruptcy in the past. I have also read that some of the wives have been on welfare and/or food stamps at times.

As for why they do it (share a husband) I suppose it's part of their religious beliefs, whether they were raised with that belief system or not.

Myself, I want to enjoy this life, and would never share my husband in hopes of getting to a higher place in the next life. Just my opinion! I also believe in family planning, and not living beyond my means in having children I can't afford to support.

Not everyone shares my value system, I get that. I like watching a show that reaffirms (to me) my reasons for being monogamous, and if that makes me weird, so be it :)

You may want to watch an episode or two, since you seem to be curious, as I was. I find it telling that so far, none of the adult children have indicated that they want polygamy for themselves...

reply

You really should watch an episode. In my opinion, the first season was the best because it dealt more with why they live the way they do. It's went totally downhill from there and is now mostly producer generated drama.

As far as the wives being miserable, yes, three of them are. But, having said that, Christine and Janelle hide it well and the past couple of seasons have shown that Meri truly is. The only one that isn't at all miserable is Robyn and that's because she's the one that gets the most attention from Kody.

reply

Come on - you know Robyn gets jealous. She may not be miserable, but even if she is the queen bee, she still has to share her boo. 

Pompe -- I totally agree with you. I've been watching the show since day one.......and STILL cannot understand how they all do it!!
