I watched the HBO series Big Love and I was curious about a "real-life" polygamous family, so I've watched the series from the beginning. From what I've read online, most of the wives and Kody have filed bankruptcy in the past. I have also read that some of the wives have been on welfare and/or food stamps at times.
As for why they do it (share a husband) I suppose it's part of their religious beliefs, whether they were raised with that belief system or not.
Myself, I want to enjoy this life, and would never share my husband in hopes of getting to a higher place in the next life. Just my opinion! I also believe in family planning, and not living beyond my means in having children I can't afford to support.
Not everyone shares my value system, I get that. I like watching a show that reaffirms (to me) my reasons for being monogamous, and if that makes me weird, so be it :)
You may want to watch an episode or two, since you seem to be curious, as I was. I find it telling that so far, none of the adult children have indicated that they want polygamy for themselves...
