If Tony was baptized when he was 17 then he would have had to have written permission from his parents to be baptized. Choice of religion is a residual right that custodial parents have until the person turns 18. When it comes to Mormons converting a Catholic, or Catholics converting a Mormon, it is a feather in the respective religion's cap.
There is a lot of animosity between the LDS Church and the AUB because for years the AUB would have their young men attend the LDS Church so that they could be ordained and receive the priesthood. The way the LDS Church has handled this is that children of AUB members cannot convert and be baptized unless the disavow their polygamist parents. That is why Maddie was denied membership, she refused to disavow the Browns. I think it was more like her family was too famous and they were in the process of suing the State of Utah over the polygamy issue.
The fact is that as soon as Tony and Mykelti are married she can join The Church without any questions being asked. Her family at that point is Tony. Then she and Tony and be sealed in an LDS Temple for all time and eternity.
The LDS Church doesn't care that much about the offspring of polygamists, except those polygamists, like Kody Brown, that distort things and don't even know their own religion, let alone the LDS Church.
I have several good friends who are members of the AUB and they just cringe every time Kody opens his mouth and tries to explain their religion.
An example of where a child of a polygamist was accepted by the LDS Church is Brady Williams (My Five Wives) oldest son. He was baptized into The Church and is currently serving an LDS mission.
