Brown Minutia

1. Christine is giving coffee to Truely.

I am just guaranteeing Truely's future by making sure she enjoys the taste of coffee now.
2. Maddie is just in her first trimester, so she's gonna be big.
I feel like I've had every first-trimester pregnancy symptom there is.
3. Janelle is charging $95 a year for Strive.
The sale is on! Now-Monday, enjoy exclusive deals on memberships with unique access to Janelle, our coaches & more.

What is Strive? Some kind of weight loss program or regimen? Not trying to be mean but if that is the case that's funny coming from Janelle being as she can't keep the weight off because she refuses to see the underlying psychological problems she has.

As for Christine giving Truely coffee, so what? Is coffee against their religion or something? I dare say she isn't giving it to her everyday so why does it matter?

As to Maddie, Cinles I didn't comment on your other post about Maddie's pregnancy. I don't think anyone here is surprised that she's pregnant so soon. But the argument, specifically in Maddie's case, that she now won't finish school don't hold water. Maddie is one of the smartest of all the kids. She will finish school and people just need to leave her alone about that. Millions of mothers go to school and while nobody said it was easy--they still do it and succeed.

I have no idea what Strive is except another way for the Browns to make money.

Considering how infrequently they tweet, I thought it an odd thing to tweet. We don't know how often she is letting her drink coffee. Perhaps the world has changed too much for me because in my world you don't give coffee to a child at all.

Yes, I think some people are surprised she got pregnant so quickly. Maddie is smart, but just because a person is smart doesn't mean they always make the best decisions. I hope Maddie continues her education - I hope TLC money & scholarships help pay for her education, however. they still have to live and now support and take care of a baby. The last I heard their plan was for both of them to go to college. It would be a hardship for both of them to go to school, work and raise a child. I guess we'll see what happens.

Ummmmm, I guess you forgot that Meri, Christine, and Robyn (there's also Christine's mother and Robyn's cousin? that lives with them) don't have an actual job. Yes, I know Maddie moved to Montana (or wherever it was) but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for them to move back closer to Vegas to have help with the baby. And isn't what's his name's (sorry-his name escapes me just now) family where they live? In any case I don't believe they wouldn't be strapped for help with the baby if they both are going to school. I just believe Maddie will continue her education. Again, nobody said it would be easy with a new born, but millions have done it and Maddie will be one that does it.

They've already moved once, to a town that has a college, so I assume that was the reason and/or Caleb's job. If they were going to move to Las Vegas, they would have already done that. The statistics show that after someone marries and has a child, the chances of them going back and/or finishing college decreases.
Being a parent substantially increases the likelihood of leaving college with no degree, with 53% of parents vs. 31% of nonparents having left with no degree after six years. Student parents operate under often crushing time demands, with more than 40% working full time or more, and over half spending 30 hours per week on caregiving activities.- Institute for Women's Policy Research

Keeping in mind we're having a discussion here..........

I don't care at all about statistics. They are not always accurate and only portray a small portion of the subject matter.

I never said it would be easy. But if anyone can pull it off I believe Maddie can and will.

In 1950 it may have been appropriate for the woman to stay at home with the children but this is 2016 and times have changed (although half the country chooses not to accept it) and a couple with a new baby cannot survive on one income alone. Hell, I'm by myself and am doing good to survive right now on one income AND NO GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE.

You just made the best argument about how hard it will be for her to continue her education. The thing is Maddie wanted to be a lawyer and Mariah wanted to be a doctor. Mariah found out how hard it was going to be to become a doctor so she adjusted her goals. It's called being in the real world. Maddie was never that interested in school anyway. If she was that passionate, like Mariah or Logan, she wouldn't have gotten married or pregnant. Maddie hasn't even finished 2 years of college. So, Maddie has adjusted, just like Mariah did - her goal right now is probably to get a profession where she can earn money - a decent living to help support the family. Does anyone even know what her major was/is? As I've said, we have to wait and see what happens.

reply

You keep bringing up over and over how hard it is and will be for them.........I never ever said it wasn't going to be hard and never ever said it would be easy for them. What I DID say was that she has a support system in place by means OF HER VERY VERY LARGE family and most do not have that kind of support. Time will indeed tell what happens after she has the baby. It's ultimately her decision and everyone should quit harping on her about staying in college and going back to college after having the baby. I still say she will continue pursuing her education, even though it may not be as she originally planned, in some form or fashion.

reply

I've never said she's not ever going back to college, but I don't see how HER VERY VERY LARGE family is going to help her in Montana. Caleb appears to be an independent guy who is going to take care of his family. If he got a job offer to work in Las Vegas, I can see that happening, but I can't see them running to Las Vegas just for a babysitter.

Don't wanna step on any toes in this little discussion, but I agree Cinles. If Maddie were that invested in her education, I doubt she would have gotten pregnant so quickly after getting married. I had a feeling that was their plan all along, but, told people a different story. I know what you mean about feeling bad for being disappointed that she didn't follow through with her college plans when they seem so happy. Maddie's own mother was concerned awhile back that she would chuck her plans and end up married with kids and so far, she hasn't been wrong about it...

reply

We should really listen to the mothers more closely because they know their kids.

Christine called MyKelti "flakey" in this episode... I think you are right.

Besides, some people just aren't college material. Logan, Mariah, and Aspyn are. Madison, MyKelti, Hunter and Garrison are not. I think less than half the Brown kids will go to college. I hope they are saving enough money to support these kids indefinitely.

The only one who might not be college material so far is Mykelti, but not college material in the Brown definition (lawyer, doctor...) Hunter is at the Air Force Academy. Eligibility for that is way beyond any college requirement and he appears to be doing well. Madison is probably the smartest child next to Mariah - I still have hope for her, even being a wife and mother. It's just going to be a tougher journey, but Maddie is very much college material. Have you watched all of Sister Wives? Because so far all of their kids are above average in intelligence and have a drive to succeed.

reply

Hi, and yes, I've watched the show from the beginning. I wondered what plural marriage looked like, and the show has answered it for me: it looks a lot harder than monogamy. As for the kids, I think the older ones will go to college, but I'm not so sure on the younger ones. The parents admitted that the eldest kids got lots of attention, and the younger ones got less, because the family had grown so much. I don't have a sense of any of them being academically inclined, but the show doesn't focus on the kids, rightfully so. For the record, I don't think college is the only route to a good future. I was impressed that Garrison came to his parents with a plan for joining the national guard. If he works hard, he can learn some great skills there that will help him later in life. I guess I'm projecting from my family experience, where the eldest kids had all the pressure to succeed and the youngest didn't, so the eldest went to college and made good lives while the youngest never did anything and stayed home with mom.

I missed that, but first kids always get more attention.

That's right - the show hasn't focused on the middle kids yet, but their intelligence is inherited, so I have no doubts about any of them being smart. The only kids I have questions about are Robyn's 3 kids from her prior marriage.

All the kids came to their parents with a plan for their future and the National Guard is a part-time gig which will probably pay for his education. There's a reason they are focusing on the older kids - out of necessity. First, it's organic drama - they don't have to make up stuff like they used to like cardboard boat races and second, highlighting them enables them to get these expensive events paid for and the kids some income.

I'm the 3rd of 3 children and I had more pressure to succeed in school than my 2 older siblings. There is no doubt kids born at different times will be raised differently, but I doubt the Browns are going to expect anything less than the best from any of their kids - whatever they decide to do.

reply

I am not sure, I guess that could be true but in case of the Brown's it seems like the youngest ones get a lot more attention (atleast from their moms). Truely seems to get a lot of attention from Christine and the rest of the family (not Kody) and King Sol gets tons and now the baby is probably getting tons of attention too, Savannah also gets a lot of attention from Janelle and Janelle even admitted that she is still her baby and sort of babies her. I think the oldest and youngest kids get the most attention and unfortunately the middle children don't get as much.

reply

The other poster said the Browns said the older children got more attention and that makes sense because there were fewer kids. Right now the small kids get attention because they need attention. Plus we're only seeing what they show us on TV. Savannah may be Janelle's youngest child, but she's sort of on the young end of the middle children. Paedon & Dayton kind of stand alone to me, then Gwen, Ysabel, Aurora, Breanna & Savannah are who I consider the middle children. Maybe they don't get enough attention because they're all girls. Didn't they have an episode about that?
