Sooooo Maddie and Kaleb are first cousins it seems. Kaleb's dad is Curtis, who is Cody's full blood brother.
I see this is a non issue for the whole Brown family. (And from the attitude of the fans on this board, marrying your first cousin is anything but taboo and dipping dangerously into the shallow end of the gene pool seems totally fine).

Curtis is not Caleb's dad. Curtis was married to Caleb's sister, Erica, so he was Caleb's brother-in-law. Mike is Caleb's dad.

Unless Curtis was married to Caleb, no he isn't her uncle by marriage. He is nothing but the brother if her aunt by marriage. This is not remotely a relation. No titkr exists for this.

shareMaybe he is her second Uncle by marriage. Not technically related and not a blood relative at all. The thing that bothers me more than anything is that they started up their friendship at Kody's brothers funeral while Madison was only 16 and Caleb was a grown man. Ultimately nothing untoward happened but, any grown man that has interest in a 16 year old girl doesn't seem quite right.
** Kind of reminds me of the movie Peggy Sue Got Married- Nicholas Cage's character was involved in a much younger woman after his marriage to Peggy failed. In a touching moment he confides to Peggy that his young girlfriend thought " The Big Bopper" was a sandwich !! Haha.
As people get older and more mature after experiencing life, even a fairly large age gap can seem insignificant. But the difference between a 16 year old child and a 24-26 year old man is huge ( IF said man is of normal maturity).
Despite all of that, Caleb and Maddie do seem to love each other, although I think all the Brown daughters would go to great lengths to get away from the family, and provide a sense of security and love for themselves ( that they perhaps did not receive from their own father)...
Maddie's DOB is Nov 3, 1995, Curtis Brown died on June 17, 2013. She turned 18 5 months after Curtis died.

No, I'm sure they weren't making out, but Caleb's brother in law was being laid to rest. Caleb did support Erica and her kids after Curtis died, but, it seems the wrong time to be flirting and playing. Just my opinion- to each their own.

Plus last night when they replayed it, it was a long time until they physically saw each other and when they did it was at Erica's house. We don't know if they were flirting - texting and talking don't necessarily mean flirting.

shareMaddie was in her first year of college and we know kids do things when they get away from home just because they can. Since Janelle didn't know, there wasn't anything she could say. Plus every situation is unique and this was pretty unique. It's not like he was a stranger she met online. They left that one up to Meri.

If MY daughter was texting a grown man when she was 17, I would have a problem with it. My kids were far from angels, and even though my husband and I had realistic expectations for them, we were able to figure out what they were up to, even when they were away at school. Just my experience and my opinion.
It ended well with Caleb and Maddie, but in many cases of 25 year old men being special friends with a 17 year old girls, it doesn't.
Maddie graduated from high school when she was 17. She didn't turn 18 until mid way through her first semester at Utah State.
shareI totally agree with you in general, but every situation is different. Maybe Janelle did know - from the way she has acted, she knew way more than anyone else. This was just one of those unique situations.
