Was the move to Vegas justified?

Okay so I am watching seasons 1-2 because Ive never seen them before. I started watching SW the episode King Sol was born so I knew nothing or saw any episodes prior to that one. So as I watch season 2 and it's talking about them being investigated, Kody and the Kodettes decide it's time to book it on out of Utah and head for Sin City. That was so awful for the kids in particular to just up and leave everything they've ever known to live in a big city where they have no friends or family. Robyn's kids in particular had been moving around like nomads anyway so it was really hard on them to finally think they are settled and then more change happening. That couldn't have been great for Dayton's Aspergers. But I say all that to say, was the move justified or was this Kody's excuse to move to a big city and strut like a peacock for a whole new town that didn't know him yet. That's pretty traumatizing for kids to be forced to pack up their whole lives in a matter of days with no real outlook on what's coming next. They basically left in the still of the night. I loved how TLC added in the police sirens and kids screaming "go go go" as Meri is frantically trying to close the hatch on the moving truck lol. Some people say they did it for the fame and the show. What do you all think?

reply

No. Just NO.

reply

Well kids all the time and they are okay. If you're in a military family you can move several times. I moved 3 times and I was okay in the long run, sure no kids wants to move but usually in the end things turn out okay. Look at Maddie she was the one that threw the biggest fit and was the maddest about it and then she ended up loving it.

I think in Kody and the wives minds it was justified, I actually think some of them really thought they would be in trouble, not saying I feel that way but I thnik they did. At the end of the day it doesnt really matter whether it was justified, the kids seemed to have adjusted well enough.

reply

Well it does matter if it was justified because if there was no REAL threat, then there was no reason to turn their kids lives upside down. Just because the kids adjusted eventually doesn't mean it was okay to do it. To me, it seemed like hysteria and paranoia. It's not like it's 1955, they weren't living like the Warren Jefffs followers. Christine in particular is always going on and on about polygamy and it's secrecy. For example the hospital stuff. Those doctors and nurses don't give a damn who's married to who or what the living situation is, but Christine makes it seem like it's 1955 again and it's a witch hunt.

reply

They moved, when you move it doesn't mean its the end of the world. Sorry but the kids adjusted just fine. Whether you, I or anyone else thinks it was or wasn't justified it doesn't matter really. It was a news that the family was being investigated, so in their mind they must have thought it was justified. I'm not saying I feel that way, but its not really up to me on how i see it, its how they felt. To be honest I don't think polygamy is a talked about thing before their show..Yes I'd heard of it, but never to the extent as I have since the show started. But hey you feel one way and I just feel another, in the fact that I think in THEIR minds they thought it would matter.

reply

There was no threat. It was made up. However, things happen for a reason and the move to Las Vegas was the best thing that could have happened to the children. Christine lives in some polygamist paranoia haze.

reply

My sentiments exactly.

reply

Robyn is in the same haze, only with a judgy attitude about it.

reply

Robyn acts like she drank the polygamist kool aid, but Christine is just bat sh!t crazy about some things. Not just polygamy.

reply

I can tell you honestly that nobody in Utah was after the Browns. Any perceived threat was in their minds.

reply

I remember that at the time, Kody was being investigated by the state of Utah for polygamy. I guess that would justify the move in their minds. The main effect the move has had on the kids seems to be a move away from their parents religion. We haven't seen any of the older kids wanting that lifestyle. Maddie and Mykelti both want to be LDS but they aren't permitted to join unless they renounce their parents religion. (Which is totally screwed up in my mind, but its up to the LDS to determine who gets to join, I guess). That said, did the move to Vegas add storyline to the show? I would say yes.

reply

When they made the big ado about moving and 'gittin' out of town' before the sheriff gits em,  the state of Utah had already said they weren't pursuing Kody. It was all for the show. Some of the kids had already said they were not going to be polygamists before they moved - Maddie and Logan and possibly Hunter, Aspyn and Mykelti. Who said they had to renounce their parent's religion? They said they were too high profile and they both can join now because their husbands are their family. But they're still on TV.

reply

My recollection is that Maddie had to publicly renounce her parents religion if she were to be baptised as LDS. That was when she went off to college. I could certainly be mistaken.

reply

She may have said something like that, but it's not true. The reason they have put this on air is because they're pissed and they're trying to make the LDS Church look bad, but it's all about them being so public.

reply

Jonnie I remember the same thing you do. They talked about it at least twice, once when Maddie wanted to join the church and once when Mariah wanted to join.

reply

Here's an article about what was said on the show about Maddie joining the LDS church.

Here's an article and a lot of discussion about it from people, many of them in the LDS church. It's pretty long, but this is one comment that mirrors my questions.

I can understand as a public figure being asked to publicly denounce polygamy or any intent on entering into it, but publicly denouncing her family? What does that even entail? If anything, I would imagine any church would encourage a person to hold strong to loving family ties. Something seems off to me, maybe I’m missing part of the story.
If you read the first article, they bounce back and forth between denouncing her family and them being public. It wasn't about denouncing her family, it was about denouncing polygamy. I think the show misguided us on this because the reason was more about her family being on TV.

You mean Mykelti instead of Mariah? They really didn't go into detail about what happened with Mykelti, but we can assume the same thing happened.

Are any of the "plot lines" in this show sincere? The move to Vegas, Meri's pregnancy drama, the divorce drama ... all hyped for the show. I bet Meri and Janelle's therapy is for the show too, since neither really seems to care. They were lucky to have 2 weddings to make episodes out of. They can't keep throwing parties and doing goofy dances each time a kid graduates. They've had more parties and vacations on this show than I've had in the last 5 years. TLC must be salivating over Maddie's pregnancy. Grandkids....

reply

I check their ratings occasionally and they're pretty darn good. 

Kids these days are friggen wimps. My brother and I went to 5 different schools growing up as my mom moved a lot for work. We were fine.
