CURIOUS about Truly

Other than a serious speech impediment, what is wrong with Truly?

reply

Nothing, she seems like a normal hype kid

reply

Nothing. And her speech issue is hardly serious.

reply

Actually it is serious, both the way it sounds and thr difficulty she will have as she gets older. I've posted this before. A child her age speaking like that is going to have a very difficult time as a teenager if it is not fixed now. People keep making light of it and attacking a couple of us on this board who have said this. I have experience babysitting/volunteering/AND raising my own child. I've never heard a speech impediment this severe.
She probably is getting help for it, which is great.
But please don't say it isn't serious. She's a sweet little girl, but I can barely listen to her speak.
I really wish people would research how difficult it becomes to shake these "baby talk" impediments the older the child gets instead of brushing it off.

reply

I agree with Risey. It's "baby talk" and it helps her get/maintain attention in the family and the show. Notice ANY of the other kids getting the attention she gets? Nope.

reply

Her speech impediment sounds like she is Tongue-tied (Ankyloglossia), which can be resolved by clipping the frenulum under the tongue. With Ankyloglossia a child can't extend their tongue to their teeth which makes it impossible to make certain sounds which results in their speech sounding like baby talk.

Considering her age it would still require speech therapy which is provided by schools.

I heard an adult who had the same speech impediment that Truely has and I immediately thought 'that is not going away unless it's addressed'. They do need to fix it.

To say you that you know all about Truely and her situation because you have "experience babysitting/volunteering/ and raising [your] own child" is pretty much the same as saying you have no more knowledge or experience in this area than anyone else here. Truely is surrounded by responsible adults, and I'm sure she also has responsible teachers at school. If they think she has a problem, I'm sure they're taking steps to deal with the problem in an appropriate manner. They're not likely to need any help from members of the viewing audience, no matter how much hardcore babysitting experience they might have.

reply

Actually, it's not.

She has something called rhoticism, which is a delay, or inability, to pronounce the letter "r". This is usually one of the final steps in speech development in children and a lot of kids have trouble with it. It is very easily treated, Christine has already mentioned (on twitter I think) that Truly is already in speech therapy for it.

~Oh look... a room full of men that have NO idea how to satisfy a woman.~

reply

Yes. I suffered from it and took speech therapy in grade one . It didn't take long to sort out. I still can't roll my r though. Which caused issues when I lived in Cuba and the difference between a rolled r and not rolled, changed a word.

reply

You lived in Cuba?!?! Oh my god I'm so jealous of you right now! lol! I've always wanted to go there, I've heard amazing things about it!

Many children her age speak that way. They generally get speech intervention in school in grades 2 through 4. When speaking to a speech therapist about this, she told me that most kids outgrow it by the time they are 10 and if they don't, then it more than likely will continue throughout their life.
She is not even close to ten yet so I doubt she will still be talking like that by the time she is...

reply

Exactly what Canada and Mort said, anyone with a good ear can hear that she drops her "r" sounds.

That's an articulation disorder, which is one of the easiest things to remediate.

reply

She was born in front of cameras and she's a tad high strung.

reply

She's a little ham and is entertaining and quite the breathe of fresh air this show needs 😀

Joon:you're out of your tree Sam: it's not my tree 

reply

I think she's adorable.

reply

Geez, it was cute when Truly was three.

She's now 27 and it just doesn't work any more...!😃

reply

Well, you do have a point. I think I've always had a soft spot for Truely because Kody seemed so focused on Robyn when she was born. I agree by now she should be talking more normally, and speech therapy is very needed!

reply

I noticed it when she officiated Robyn and Sol's wedding. She really sounds like Elmer Fudd. I never realized how much she looks like Mariah when she was that age. They showed some young pics of Mariah and I really noticed the resemblance. Guess they take after their dad.
