TLC please give the women public speaking courses

These women use the word "like" so many times during the course of a conversation and each time I cringe.
The children speak this way as well. It should not take an entire show to get an idea across..

Communication skills have diminished, probably starting 20 years ago and escalating with our different ways of communication through technology. Now that the leader of our country is barely literate, don't count on anyone being articulate or more articulate.

Do you want them to have public speaking skills or just not sound like the people they play? They aren't playing anyone, they are all just them, grammatical errors and all. They all have a rural Utah accent.

Utah is roughly the size of New England, we have just as many accents in Utah as do the states that comprise the states of New England.

reply

Desertdude1953 I would be satisfied if they would stop using the filler word "like".
I know that all of rural Utah does not speak that way.
They need basic speaking skills. It is hard to imagine that Meri attends college classes and still continues to speak this way.

Meri doesn't go to college.

reply

She has attended college. She uses the filler word "like" too much. She needs someone to help her learn to verbalize and articulate her thoughts and feelings.
Thanks

They all could use that skill, but I agree, right now Meri needs it more than the others. I wish she would take some college classes. That's what she said she was going to do and I think she did start, but sadly I think that was right when she met Sam. I wonder if she dropped out that semester because she never spoke about it again.

You are correct, Utah has four distinct accents that are distributed throughout the state. It is what happens when you have a state that is 84,899 square miles.

I don't really notice the colloquialisms of people on reality TV. They don't have a script so they will use the pause words they feel comfortable with, which in Meri's case it is like. After the Valley Girls Era, I guess I became immune to like.

These are real people we watch every week. They come with all their faults, including their speech. Even though the show has become more scripted in terms of plot lines, these are not actors that are memorizing lines.

Everyone could benefit from listening to themselves from a recording. I use 'um' as my pause word, but the people that listen to my radio show know that is my word I use when I am trying to kill air time.

Record yourself and come back and tell us what your pause word is; you have one.

People in my city have different accents, so I couldn't even imagine how many are in my state.

You're right and I'm sorry I said anything negative about the way they speak. I was thinking more about Meri's level of confidence. I used to speak to groups as part of my job. I joined Toastmasters and that did not work for me at all. However, what I did is what DesertDude said - I started recording myself reading anything and then reading speeches I had to give. When I first recorded myself I was shocked at how I sounded, but after awhile I got better. It not only made me a good speaker, but it affected my every day speaking.
