Surprisingly enjoyable

I just finished watching this and I was surprised how enjoyable it was. I guess I shouldn't have been too shocked seeing as how I also liked Westfeldt's other film Kissing Jessica Stein but still, sometimes with these smaller, indie films you take a chance... Anyway, it was very funny but also poigniant and touching in some places which was also a surprise. Just enjoyable all around, I'm sure I will watch this one again!

I liked it too!! I'm not sure why folks are hating on this movie so much. It's a quirky comedy.

I just watched it and really enjoyed it. I mean, you know what you're getting before you watch it - like most movies of this genre - but it is a sweet ride. Sure, on analysis it had its faults, but on the whole I think it's a good film, enhanced by the likeable actors. I had been put off before because of all the negativity on this board, and some reviews, but sometimes you have to make your own mind up and I'm glad I decided to give it ago! Because like the original poster - I found it surprisingly enjoyable!

I agree! I liked this particular approach towards talking about parenthood! Definitely not a traditional family by any means, it illustrates that being atypical is not a death sentence.

Thought it was great! What's next for this bunch?? I'd like to see another movie with all of them together again.

reply

OMG, that's a great idea!

I agree! I REALLY loved Adam Scott and Kristen Wiig! They're both hilarious.

Really liked this one. Jennifer does a really great job of capturing those pivotal moments in life.

Agreed!

In addition to this, I just want to share that I really enjoyed Jennifer's performance. She captured the quiet emotions of Julie in a way where you could practically see the thoughts flash across her face and it drew me into the film. This type of acting seems like it'd be very difficult in front of an audience of crew, but she did a great job.

I think people were hating on it because it wasn't what they were expecting, a slap stick comedy of SNL alumni perhaps? Instead, Friends With Kids is a real-life, modern comedy that makes you think, and the cast who are best known for SNL are portraying real life characters and situations. Jennifer picked the perfect cast for this film. I thought they did a great job and it was actually refreshing to see them perform something different. Because this film was so much like "real life," I think some were not expecting the dialogue or cursing (?), but honestly I did not even notice the curse words as discussed on the other threads. I guess in my life, I'm used to hearing conversations like that in the real world. There was never anything insulting in the movie. In fact, I thought the entire film was heartfelt, sweet, and fun!

I enjoyed this as well! People in these threads seem to be particularly vicious!

I watched this on Netflix because it was featured. I was surprised because it really drew me in. I thought is was a well balanced film.

Wow! Just saw her in the Broadway show, The Explorer's Club. She was fantastic and it was a hilarious evening. The actors had great comic timing and all were superb. Jennifer played Phyllida and was the only female of the explorer club. It was nice to see another women up on the stage surrounded by those men and holding her own as a talent. Not to mention she is a beauty!
I went on Netflix to check out her latest film, Friends with Kids. I have to say, I'm so impressed by her. I didn't expect this young woman to be so smart and outspoken through her writing. I knew Friends with Kids was a comedy but I was surprised to find that it touches on real life family and relationship situations. Also, she is a really gifted actress. Im a fan of the individuals in the cast and was thrilled to see them in the movie. Seeing Jennifer again, amongst an outstanding cast, she held it down.

The plot is different, yes, but explores the answers to the questions we normally fear. To see this cast together, to laugh, cry, and think seriously about life all in one movie. Jennifer Westfeldt is a Super Woman for making this film and starring so wonderfully in it. What an incredibly creative and highly skilled person. She is definitely someone amazing for the youth to look up to.

I couldn't agree with you more! Jennifer IS a Super Woman! I thought this movie was awesome on so many levels - for its writing, directing, and the acting. The story is a great concept and excellently executed by Jennifer's super talents and the cast's performances. The cast is a lot of fun and Jennifer and Adam Scott carry this film superbly. Her work is always insightful and I can't wait to see her next film!
