The couples in this film were intense! From what I've seen of my "friends with kids" (lol), having them around seems to amplify the intensity of any situation.
When I hosted my first family get together with my sister's kids, I remember them running around so much, terrorizing my cat (who hates children to this day), food was being spilled, there was screaming and so much commotion. You never really realize how demanding they actually are until you have them and I think this film touched on that a little. I really liked that the story included couples with a variety of dynamics and showed how having kids affected them.
Agreed! People who don't have kids don't understand - It's WAY harder than it looks! It also puts so much pressure on a relationship, so if there were lot's of problems before the kids, the likelihood is that they will rear their heads!
It’s not your typical romantic comedy. Like all JW creations, she gives you something to think about – On dating, on relationships, and on having kids. It’s sweet, unpredictable, and will keep you engaged. You will love the supporting actors whose stories are funny, real, and just as important as the leads. Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott share great chemistry. Both get to display more of their dramatic talents than what you’re used to seeing from them. The pivotal point in the story near the end was a true tearjerker. I think this is one of JW’s most memorable acting performances. She conveyed deep, contemplative, romantic feelings, and carried the scene with great intensity.
Spoilers -> Some of the best scenes were the dramatic, uncomfortable, and intense scenes. Like when Jon Hamm's character was drunk and lashed out at the New Year's Eve dinner, when Julie confesses to Jason, and Julie and Jason's final scenes. These scenes were emotional and engaging. I also thought they were a great display of range and drama for the actors. It was a pretty intense film for a comedy but it's written brilliantly to give you a great amount of laughs and romance. I even found myself on the edge of my seat! Plus, Jennifer's performance is so captivating. I've always known her as the sweet and quirky love interest but her performance here reminds you that she's a highly skilled actress with an exceptional background. Remember that she starred in over 25 Off-Broadway and regional theater productions AND she's a graduate of Yale (see bio). There is no doubt that Jennifer can carry a film, as it's producer and as the star. See any film, play, or TV show she's in or has made. She's an intelligent voice and offers a fresh approach to traditional situations.
They were intense! and sooo good. I loved seeing the cast doing something different too. They were outstanding in this film, real, fun, serious, and like friends that have known each other for a really long time. I love this film. Jennifer did an exceptional job with putting this together and she was excellent as usual.
