Rupert Penry-Jones

Here in the US, I was a devoted fan of MI-5 & loved most of the cast & especially Rupert who had the lead for about 4 or 5 years. So, I was happy to see a series with him but I was absoluted shocked at his very small part. He's barely a supporting player; the young actor was in more scenes than he was. He has had other lead roles so this is a definite disappointment to me. He was the lead in Whitechapel so I can't understand how the female (whom I never seen in anything before) gets the big lead.

As far as I recall, Rupert asked for this rather shady role because he'd like to try something different. He's the leading actor beyond any doubt.

Unfortunately he broke his leg in a charity football game before the filming started. That's also why Writer Peter Moffat added the shove-down-the-stairs scene to make his appearing with crutch reasonable. I guess that could partly be the reason he didn't seem to appear that much. He appeared a lot more in Series 2.

But Silk's center is Martha Costello rather than Clive Reader. And Maxine Peake has been absolutely brilliant on delivering this role. She's a RADA graduate and was praised as one of the finest actress of her generation. I hope you to consider to be more patient and enjoy her performance.

To acyancat; Thanks so much for the additional information. It makes more sense to me now that you've explained the injury. I do have to say that the reason I turned it on was to watch him; I have no problems with the Martha
Costello actress either way but was just disappointed about his role. Was she pregnant in real life too? Just wondering.

reply

I don't think so. I can't remember Maxine's exact words but I think she mentioned in more than one interview that she'd gain or loss a few pounds to better fit in the character. And Martha Costello in her interpretation is a woman "never go to gym".

Have you seen Rupert P-J in "Sexual Virtuality"? It's from the 1990s. He shows us some skin in it. So young and cute. :)

Rupert here was essentially reprising the same role he did in the earlier "North Square." Same character, different name, vying against female barrister better than he is for silk, etc etc.

"Silk" is a remake of "North Square."

Which, ironically, had as the clerk of chambers a very, sneaky and cheeky Phil Davis (his costar in Whitechapel.)

"North Square" I think is better, except for Maxine Peake, who carries "Silk" to the level it does reach.

Had never come across him until Spooks and out of all the characters in that his became my favourite. He played him so emotionally. I also like his character in Whitechapel quite a vulnerable sort and he plays him beautifully. Not too fond of Clive Reader - too smarmy basically but as someone said RPJ apparently wanted a change of role.

Maxine Peak by far one of the best in Britain today on TV, and Silk is an ensemble cast a very good one at that.

reply

Oh yes. What an ensemble! My only tiny nit is that magnificent Frances Barber is underused.

But that's her character--a former glory girl with feet of clay, so she tends not to be center stage at Shoe Lane.

But the limited scenes she has are elevating the whole show, in an already great cast (including the everywhere-man Alex Jennings.)

Frances makes me smile playing CW, bit naughty but deep down a good egg.

RPJ is a DREADFUL actor. He brings the whole show down with his poor mannerisms, bland acting and lack of subtlety.

No wonder this contrived show was cancelled. It was full of comic books characters.

Rupert is an excellent (award winning) actor. He comes from an acting family. He was amazing in "39 Steps"!

He is married to actress Dervla Kirwan, certainly rearing a third generation of actors.

His father was Peter Penry-Jones, a very talented actor; his mother is Angela Thorne (best known for playing the role of Marjorie Frobisher, the best friend of Audrey fforbes-Hamilton - in "To the Manor Born."

His brother is actor Laurence Penry-Jones; married to actress Polly Walker.

Some folks just don't like others. But, his acting credentials are not at issue. He was "To the Manner Born."

He is to be admired for taking on the role of "rat" in "Silk," because he is usually cast in the "Cary Grant" type "pretty-boy" roles (for obvious reasons; he is easy on the eyes). Clearly, the bluest eyes in the business.

In "Silk" he was a real stinker; Martha was pregnant with his baby and he was carrying on with Niamh (to his credit, he didn't know) but when he found out, he wasn't good for much more than the typical dead beat dads on Judge Judy. He said that "he would provide anything the baby needed," but I definitely had the idea that he meant showing up from time to time, with the occasional package of nappies (too small, so they would also be useless).

Being born to parents who are actors is no guarantee that one will be a decent actor; tens of thousands of artists of all kinds have children who didn't inherit their talent, and tens of thousands of artists have talent that far exceeds whatever their parents had.

And despite your little pun, his mother is, and his late father was, hardly "manor"-worthy. Neither is/was first-rate; both are ordinary, plebeian actors -- adequate but nothing special, and not much range. Which is exactly what RPJ is -- attractive, charismatic, a good reader of lines with reasonable emotion, but not an actor who really inhabits a role or who ever surprises viewers. Admittedly, the medicore writing of Silk didn't help -- but RPJ is no great shakes as an actor.

And: Award-winning? Really? One insignificant, genre-based award? Not to mention that even big awards mean relatively little, as the Oscars wins routinely tell us.

He gives decent performances on decent TV shows. He's a mid-range actor whose charisma has carried him farther than his talent/skill could have.
