One of the best this year?

So far this is my top 5 list of favorite movies this year:
1. Man of steel
2. Spectacular now
3. Prisoners
4. Pacific rim
5. This is the end
I haven't seen gravity or 12 years a slave yet, and I really look forward to wolf of Wall Street. Anybody else have spectacular now in their top 5?

Is it possible the specatacular now could even be nominated for an Oscar? It had solid directing and could even be nominated for adapted screenplay. The two leads gave great performances too, but movies like these seem to get overlooked

reply

It's a great movie but it will not be a factor at the Oscars. I thought it might be a big deal for the independent film awards circuit, but there are a ton of very good independents this year as well. Oh well. Still a very enjoyable and relatable story.

reply

I'm still thinking about my list but my top 2 for sure are

1.) The Spectacular Now

2.) Short Term 12

reply

Saw gravity over the weekend and it knocks pacific rim off my list

reply

It's really something isn't it ?

reply

Oh yeah, it was breathtaking. The only movie worth paying the extra money to see in 3D in theaters in my opinion. Should win a few oscars

reply

It's in my top 20, but not my top 5 for 2013. My top 5: 1. Spring Breakers 2. 12 Years A Slave 3. The Place Beyond the Pines 4. Blue is the Warmest Color 5. Gravity

I can't believe this thread, literally laughing my ass off.

reply

so why were you LMAO ing??which movie listed here made you do so?

reply

i'm laughing because there are people here that think Spectacular Now is Oscar worthy, that This Is The End is worthy of a top 5, that Man of Steel should be up there, too. It's all madness to me :P but then some people don't watch that many films so maybe they don't have much to choose from. But it baffles me that people enjoyed this movie at all and seem to be ignoring The To Do List, which was by far the best comedy of the year. Of course this is all just my opinion, but holy crap did I think Spectacular Now was awful, so bad.

First of all nobody said in any certainty that this movie is worth an oscar or that it should win an oscar. Someone merely asked if there is any chance that it might get some recognition.

Second, like someone else mentioned, your list doesn't have many features that will draw an oscar. By my count, there are only three movies (one being a documentary, not a movie) from your list that will probably get a nomination.

You were right that not everybody gets to see as many movies, but you are the perfect example of somebody who does see a lot of movies that are still truly not that great , maybe even good.

In the end, we all have the same *beep* taste in movies.

I do want to see Upstream Color though. It looks quite interesting.

What's more funny is that you mention 'Only God Forgives' though. Don't be so snobby, everyone has other opinions. The critics seem to think otherwise by the way.

reply

you say everyone has other opinions, yet you call me snobby... only slightly hypocritical, don't you think?

Interested to know why you think I'm snobby, surely can't be because I mentioned Only God Forgives?

reply

foot in mouth disease. it's sad you need to back up all your idiot remarks. no one cares.

well, to be honest, going by your ratings and the films you've rated higher than mine and lower than mine I can totally see why you think I'm snobby, but then I can say you seem to only enjoy extremely simple movies, Spectacular Now gets a 10 from you and Amelie gets a 5. I'm sorry but that's extremely laughable. So yeah, call me a snob if you like. But damn, I'm glad I'm not as easily entertained as you seem to be.

But at the same time, you give a film like Dancer in the Dark 10 stars. Your ratings are just all over the place, Dancer in the Dark is much more of an acquired taste than Only God Forgives, but whatever, "opinions", right?
