Detroit? What the heck?
All of the many Patterson/Cross books I've read were set (or anchored) in or around Washington, D.C. Since when does Alex Cross work for the Detroit PD?

That's the reason. I'm a Detroiter and in the past few years the city has offered monetary incentives for movies to be filmed here. There have been more filmed here than you're probably aware of. Gran Torina with Clint Eastwood was filmed less than a mile from my house, well the barber shop scene was anyway, in the suburbs.
shareI didn't get that either. There was that scene where Cross's wife was talking about how great Detroit was, that the kids love the schools, etc. Really? There isn't a bigger craphole in all of America.

I'm from Detroit and I have to say that part stuck out to me as well, especially the part about the great schools. I figure they must have lived in the suburbs of Detroit. So if you call it "Metro-Detroit", a lot of nice neighborhoods and good schools get added to the equation. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good schools in the city, literally. The best high school by far in the city is Cass Tech.
shareAlex was talking about a move to Washington DC. The public schools there are probably lower than Detroit's.
Every effort to improve Washington's public schools are defeated by politics and entrenched time servers who don't give a crap other than their paychecks.
A young Korean woman, Michelle Rhee, took charge in 2007-2010. She began weeding out the crooks and idiots and made progress. But was outfought by teacher unions and the political defeat of the mayor who picked her. This is the city that reelected a mayor smoking crack on tv.
Maybe Alex could have taken that 35% FBI increase and put his kids in a private school there. But I doubt that raise could pay the tuition.
I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else
Whether that's true of or not, it's offensive to people like me who remember Detroit as one of the great cities in this country. Downtown is still nice at least.
