Why didn't he get help?

Why didn't Neil get help once he was better? I just don't get that. He had a wife and baby back home who he must have known got a MIA telegram and he didn't do anything to let them know he was ok? After being shot down I would have tried to get the hell out of there especially since he had a baby. It just didn't make sense that he stayed there and didn't contact anyone.

Because the Japanese killed anyone caught helping the anti-Japanese guerrillas and to seek help could cause more death and suffering.

When Neil told the tribe to help the other man instead of himself, they warned him that it was so dangerous, they couldn't do it again (get a soldier back to the American's). Neil knew that he was stuck until help arrived so made the best of it by helping out the tribe once he was healed.
