Annie Hathaway Some More Details
Annie: "My mother was in the national tour of Les Mis when I was seven. She was the factory
girl and went on a number of times as Fantine and I got to see her. [She had Annie's picture
on her Dressing Room table and when she wanted to conjure up Fantine's love for Cossett
she would look at Annie's picture.] This music has been the background to my life and was
such a huge part of my childhood. When I found out that I was going to play the same role that my mother played, well, it's hard to put into words how I felt. It's very personal for me. It feels like it has come a full circle in my life. I felt very lucky and the whole thing felt like serendipity."
"I found out that they were auditioning for Les Miserables and I kept pestering them until I got
a time. And because of my mom I knew the part of Fantine so well and when I met with Tom I sang for him for about three hours. And then I had to wait a month until I found out that I'd got the part."
Jackman: 'I knew Anne had a great voice and I heard Tom describe her as the muse of the production and I think that's true."
She had her hair cut for real.
Annie: "I wasn't expecting it to be such a big deal because it was my idea, something I wanted
to do for a long time and I knew it was something that the character did, so I just offered it to
the director, and he said 'yes' and as it, I got closer I just thought. I can't reallytake it back
now. I've now done back flips out of windows, I've jumped off buildings, but cutting off my hair
reduced me to a mental-patient level of crying. I was inconsolable."
She underwent an extreme physical transformation for her role as Fantine.
Annie: "Over five weeks I lost 25 lbs and I lost 15 in the last two weeks." She admitted
unsafely.
Of Fantine's journey she said, "You know I'm not method, but I was playing a martyr. There's
something about the depth of her suffering that gives life to the love that you experience in
the rest of the film."
