How can this program be considered soft?

Guards screaming at the kids, cussing them out, threatening to beat them to a pulp, kids having to apologize to their parents in front of everyone; I don't see how a program like that can be considered "soft" by others.

I watched an episode the other night, and it was not only intense, but it even got rather disturbing when a group of juvenile delinquents went into part of the facility, and viewed a room filled with the dead bodies of their so-called homies.

Soft? Never heard that before. You'd think these kids would have to be ignorant as **** to keep getting into trouble after doing the program, but... social circles are so influential at that age, and kids are so impressionable.

It's certainly not soft, although I do feel good when they have nice 'updates' at the end of the show.

I have seen topics people have made on here in which they say that Beyond Scared Straight is way too soft in comparison to the 1978 version. I saw a clip of the 1978 version not too long ago. While it does look more intense, the 2011 version is anything but "soft." Sometimes I feel like people will never be happy with television nowadays, even when it teaches lessons like this show does. At times I feel like some complain just for the sake of complaining.

Ahh, well there's my ignorance - I didn't even know there was a 70's version of this show.

I don't know... wasn't everything a little 'harder' back in the 70's? I think so, especially for kids. Seems to me that this generation of 1X-2X year olds has a lot more pampered little pricks, coddled beyond belief.

Think about it - from the 70's, to the 00's, kids that age - their freedoms expanded, their resources multiplied, their toys got better, and their attitudes went directly down the tubes. I play video games and post on various forums with some of these dopes, and it's AMAZING how self-entitled a lot of them are. Like the world owes them something. (The only joy I receive is imagining them adjusting to later in life with that attitude)

This show certainly isn't 'soft', but saying it doesn't have the same edge as a similar show from the 70's might be a reasonable point.

At times I feel like some complain just for the sake of complaining.
Welcome to the internet.

Is it soft.....no

Is it soft in comparison to the 1978 version....most definately!

Look up the 1978 version on youtube and compare the two.

I just watched some of the 1978 version, and yes, it does seem more hardcore. To be honest, the officers in that documentary scare me even more than the officers in the A&E version.

Holy crap, you sold me - now I've gotta watch this!...

I Just watched most of the link, and while I would not call the A&E version soft, it is nothing compared to the 1978 one. Those guys talking scare the crap out of me, and I'm in the comfort of my own home.
