I used to work with a guy who said that if he was ever sent to prison the first thing he'd do is slug a guard. Then they'd sent you to solitary right away and you'd be away from the general population. Don't kow if that would actually work.

It really depends on the prison. If you punch a guard they'll probally add more time to your sentence. There was story in the paper of a guy in rpison for 30 days but eneded up getting 15 years after assulting the gaurds while there (I guess it would depend how bad also but Prison court,post lock-up, is different than normal court,pre-lockup).
I have a friend in Prison in Ga. He tells me at the prison he's in the "Hole" has 2 beds in it and sometimes they do put another inmate in their with you. Some prisons also have a "isolation/protective" unit for inmates who are in fear of their lives or high profile inmates (celebs). You can ask to be put in a protective unit but you'll be on locked down 23 hours out of the day and once you go in "PC (protective custody)" you do not want to return to Gen pop becuase inmates will thik that you are a snitch.
The prison Lil Wayne was at did not have a protective unit for him he had to be around all the other inmates.
There's always the "Mental Health" units also which give you some isolation depending on your illness.
Best thing to do when being sent to prison is to find the biggest and scariest guy there and take him out. After that it's easy.

HAHAHA - I think we've all heard that and/or the variation about going after the toughest person on the block.
That said, since everyone is wise to it, I'm guessing they've probably established ground rules to prevent or at least discourage inmates from trying that little 'get out of general' manuever.
Example - I'm a guard and an inmate attacks me - I put him or her down, regroup, then calmly escort them back to the general ward, put them into an unlocked jail cell and loudly thank them for the information ... then I'd grab two or three key gang / jail leaders and haul them off for questioning -or- put them in solitary for a few days.
Let the jailbirds deal with wanna go crazy newbie.
