Two of my strongest feelings...
...are anger at the parents for being such poor examples, and sympathy for the kids for having such terrible parents and being in a situation they shouldn't be in.
The absolute best example of why I am angry at the parents is this...the woman who said she needed to get a second job, but hadn't done so yet. So she said she needs to start looking for one. And she "does nursing." So you continue to let your kids live in poverty because you are simply too lazy to do what you KNOW you need to do in getting a second, part time job? Give me a break!
This is also the woman who had the kid that crawls around in the dumpster (which again was heartbreaking and angering at the same time) and decides to just throw a bag of trash down and spread it everywhere. So the mother is a barely adequate provider, and she also has terrible, if any, parenting skills.
More and more this makes me wish there was some sort of means test that people had to take before they are allowed to have children. Are they going to be nurturing parents? Do they have the intelligence to be nurturing parents? Are they lazy? Do they use every excuse to not do the right thing? These parents make me sick.
I am glad that these kids at least have the love and support of the teachers at the school. After all, who else do they have to show them a good example?
And yes, I do realize that this documentary was filmed during the economic meltdown with a lot of people losing their jobs, but come on. GET A JOB WHEREVER YOU CAN, AND A SECOND IF ONE ISN'T ENOUGH! Do your job as a parent!
