The guy was obviously a shut-in who never socialized and who was very shy and socially awkward and picked on a lot. Right off the bat Andrew didn't seem like a guy you could picture chatting a girl up. I can't believe the other two guys were surprised when he revealed that he was a virgin.

shareSame. Buuuuut, that's a common thing amongst guys, I think (at least my guy friends).
To give a bit of backstory on myself, I was always an "in-between" kinda guy. Imagine a Kevin Pereira or Chris Hardwick kinda guy. A total nerd buuuuut you'd only know by talking to me for awhile. I hung out with the "popular kids" as we grew up together as children, took the same classes, and usually partied in the same circles. But, I've always felt more at home with the nerdier "outcasts" of my school, usually defending them from those popular kids I called my friends.
On both ends of the friends I kept, the question of "Are you a virgin?" came up. Amongst my football/basketball, Student Government, and more party-loving friends, we were surprised to discover some of the fooball players planned on waiting until marriage. They could have sex with any girl they wanted but actively chose not to. We were also surprised to discover that a cheerleader friend of ours who SEEMED very promiscuous hadn't had sex and didn't plan to until she got her diploma. We're 26 now and still keep in-touch. She recently got married and told me she ended up waiting even longer; her fiance being her first.
On the otherside, my friends and I were surprised to discover one of our more quiet friends lost his virginity WAY before any of us did. I'm the most social of that group and he even beat me out in age. I was a bit skeptical (I admit, I always stereotyped him as an "Andrew") buuuuut the girl he slept with (also a friend) confirmed. After, the two were pretty open about it. I'm still VERY close with this group to this day and we've all been a lot more open with each other as we grow. Actually thinking about it, they were just as "promiscuous" as the friends they wish I didn't have. :p
So, to me, this could be a reason for why Steve and Matt were surprised. Honestly, nowadays, ANYONE'S fair-game for losing their virginity in high school. Be you jock or be you burn-out, there's someone available. Steve was like my uber popular guy friends, Matt seemed a lot like me (an in-between) while Andrew seemed like that quiet friend I have. So, if both Steve and Matt have run into the same surprise I did, I'm sure their mentality would be "Anyone can lose it so EVERYONE would want to, right?"
