I personally viewed it as a superhero's origin story told from the perspective of the villain.
shareA lot of people loved this movie because it was basically Akira. Many are even saying there's no need for an actual Western adaptation of Akira because Chronicle is already so good at it.
Did people also think 2001 was bad because Kubrick was inspired by European scifi and Godzilla movies?
excuse me, where was 2001 inspired by Godzilla? I see the European sci-fi motifs but can't put my finger on a giant lizard or anti-nuke message in Space Odyssey (not being sarcastic, I really want to know).
Mind you, I've only seen a couple of the old Godzillas, and none of them was the original
Not any motiffs directly, but it appears that Kubrick (who have been known to watch kaiju movies) lifted some visual elements.

Total? that's overreacting.
No cyberpunk, no futuristic setting, no gangs, no apocalyptic scenario, no motorcycles, no military.
I only see a very clear visual reference (tribute) the last minutes in the last fights, and the inferiority complex of Andrew, nothing else.
Similarities end there.
The first hour of the movie does not have any Akira "feel".
I'm not seeing any rip-off.
Talking about anime inspirations, Stealth was much more similar to Macroos Plus, than Chronicle to Akira.

Felt the same way. Then, after the hospital scene and the bandages it was obvious.
Amy: I swear to God...I swear to God! That is NOT how you treat your human!
It was also very reminiscent of the comic book Miracle Man/Marvel Man. Especially toward the end.
In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.
It can't have been a rip-off of Akira duh Akira was animated and Akira was anyway a rip-off of a comic called Akira that was older than it so duh do your homework troll

The movie Akira wasn't a rip-off of the manga "Akira." It was a fully licensed adaptation. Huge difference.
That's like saying that the Harry Potter movies are rip-offs of the books.
