Jude is an excellent actor, crictically acclaimed on stage and screen. He'll be excellent, and I'm excited that he's working with Colin Firth, who I love. Can't remark on Fassbender, I haven't actually seen anything he's in that I recall.

A lot has changed since I first heard this film was being made with Michael Fassbender as Thomas Wolfe and Colin Firth as Max Perkins. I was pretty excited about Fassbender playing Wolfe, but I think Jude Law is the better choice. He's really been at the top of his game recently with great performances in Side Effects, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Dom Hemingway, and Anna Karenina, which I think is his best performance since The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fassbender is great, too, of course, but I think Law is the better choice for Thomas Wolfe. This film should be great.

this film should be a winner. the cast...the director....the screenplay writer. it has everything going for it. cannot wait to see jude law as Thomas wolfe.

Look, I think Jude Law is a fine actor, but Thomas Wolfe was ungainly and incredibly tall (6'6") -- a half a foot taller than Law. And they don't even look alike. And Wolfe's character is arguably the second most important, since his relationship with Perkins was the most intertwined (many attribute Wolfe's success to Perkins, and there is no doubt that the combination of the two produced magic that could not have been done in any other pairing).

jude portrayed dom hemingway, 20 lbs heavier, broken nose mutton chops. he never looked like jude law. when he portrays wolfe you can be certain he'll resemble wolfe.

In Dom Hemingway, Law looked like himself 20 pounds heavier and with mutton chops. Look at his character in Black Sea, and you can see that he's not the fresh-faced pretty boy he used to be. That said, it's one thing to "not look like yourself," but it's another to look like another specific person -- particularly one that is half-a-foot taller and who was 4 years younger than you currently are when he died. In fact, Wolfe was in his mid-20 when he began working with Perkins, an age well beyond Law to pull off. I suspect that the producers of the movie don't really care what Law looks like, as few people actually know what Wolfe looked like.

reply

This is not a bio about Wolfe. It is a story about a working relationship between Wolfe and Perkins. Therefore; Law dose not have to look exactly like Wolfe, nor dose any of the other actors have to look exactly like the characters they are portraying.

That's the one issue I have. I love Jude Law and he looks fantastic in the photos I've seen where he's playing Thomas Wolfe. I don't have a problem with his height--my problem is his age. Mainly in relation to Nicole Kidman. Nicole Kidman is playing woman almost twenty years older than Wolfe. They can't make Nicole look too much older because she's playing pretty close to her age. That means Jude has to be playing younger--over a decade younger.

As much as I love Jude, it just seems like a weird casting choice.

Excellent point. The defining nature of Wolfe and Bernstein's relationship was that she was his "mother figure" as well as his lover. Law and Kidman will have a hard time convincing anyone that they are a "May-December" relationship.

grandage is a great director having directed law in hamlet and henryV...both received critical acclaim. I've seen photos of jude as wolfe...they have made him look very boyish I think it will work.
