Guy Pearce stole the whole thing with his three-minute Fitzgerald cameo

All Law's storming and raging as Wolfe and Perkins meek acceptance of it all became repetitious and tiresome. Then Pearce does a small monologue about paying Zelda's bills and his money troubles and it's like a breath of fresh air. I couldn't stay to see when Hemingway showed up but I wonder if it was as refreshing.

I don't mean to be rude, but why would you go to a movie without watching the entire thing? (outside of a medical emergency)

reply

I had to go be an extra in a movie starting at 6:30, and my only chance to see the movie was a 4:30 showing, so I got in what I could...

reply

Do go out and see the whole film; it's well worth it.

I can’t agree there, and I did see the whole movie.

Pearce provides a great example of how to make the most of a small role. Fitzgerald’s struggles with writer’s block and his wife sanity are palpable.

That said; he did not steal anything from Firth or Law.

I would say Kidman was also good. Laura Linney is deceptively brilliant in this role, it is a very calm, centered performance for a character who exists on the peripheral, but is powerful. Linney is always a good performer; I have never understood why she doesn’t get more attention.

West was the only one who was a little disappointing, he did fine, and they really gave him very little to work with, but I would have liked it better if we could have seen Hemingway’s inner demons beneath the surface like we did with Fitzgerald. It would have added more to the theme of Genius which implies there is always a dark side.
