A movie celebrating Americana played by Brits with bad accents.

Why?

I see you are no "Genius" (pun intended) or you'd immediately recognize it was directed by a Brit and filmed in England. It is a British production so they would naturally use British actors in many roles. It doesn't bother me a bit, the acting was good enough that I quickly put their origins out of my mind and focused on the characters. I think they did a very good job.

at least linney is american, kidman is australian, and the fact that she resides in tennessee means the english production excuse is a bit of a stretch. i think firth did alright. in fact, if not for law's broad, lamgushing drawl, i would have been less distracted overall.

In addition to the fact that it's an English film, do you really think Amerika is so great that an American actor would have been an improvement? LOL. The UK is tiny compared to the USA, but we see a lot of Brits in American movies because their people are smarter, hence their actors are better. That's why.

Beauty is truth, truth beauty.

Ha-ha-ha-ha ... the Brits are "smarter"? Yeah, that is why their medical and technological discoveries lead the rest of the world! 

Truth is the Brits as a society suffer from centuries of inbreeding, pushing the average intelligence level down, and the very few who are actually capable and smart simply rise to the top and are noticed. They realize there is scant opportunity in their home country so work hard to develop skills, including acting, that can be marketed elsewhere.

It is just a survival strategy, against the bad luck of having been born in the UK.

We had the same question! These are phenomenal actors, but why Brits for such iconic Americans? The casting is not the only problem with this film. The story focuses on the dull and ignores the exciting aspects of this historic publisher. Scriber's was such an exciting publishing house, but it fell flat on screen. Experienced Hollywood critics, Les Roberts and Ann Elder, use their experience and movie knowledge to dissect the lack of genius in this film.

I think the actual question is "Why did such a movie with iconic American roles have to move to the UK to get filmed?".

Could it be down to money?

And please let's not forget that it also works the other way round, Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher, Johnny Depp as J. M. Barrie, Renee Zelweger as Bridget Jones, Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Forest Whittaker, Maggie Gyllenhaal as many more, I have no doubt there will be more in the future.

And if they're a good actor, does it matter if what their country of origin is?
