So he never found the real Sergeant?

He was tricked into killing the wrong man at the end of season 1, but the real sergeant was still out there somewhere, wasn't he? That part of the story was apparently left go. What were those flashbacks with the Swede in the last season though? Was it really him all along?

I thought it might have been the major but in the end it was really important because that wasn't what the show was about anymore.

I guess the lack of a goal for the main character is something the show sufferend from the most. The first season was all about him committing a crime in revenge, playing out the civil war questions and showing the classic story of the clean north beating the evil south in a different light. All that went out of the window and became an arbitrary circle of love interests and random motives. At the end they pull his motivation out of their magic hat to give the character some kind of send off.

I think he realised that he revenge was consuming him and he didn't want to kill another innocent man in his wild goose chase.
