A Review - (no spoilers)

If you are a fan of the comic, you may like this movie.

I didn't like either. The fault lies mainly in Grant Morrison's original source material, which I thought was over-rated. Also because of the episodic nature of the comic, the story is not one easily translates into a film. Plot twists come out of nowhere and are usually addressed by a few lines of exposition. The inclusion of secondary antagonists is distracting and adds nothing to the overall story. The result is a movie that feels rushed and loses all sense of urgency.

The film's troubles are further exasperated by the overall flat voice acting. Superman in particuarly was wooden without a trace of emotion. Lois Lane is not much better. However, Anthony Lapagla was good as Luthor. To be fair to the actors the problem lies with the source material. At no time does the script ask Superman to convey the emotions that someone in his position surely would be feeling.

Overall this the weakest entry of the DC Animated Movies, (which for the most part I have loved). I admire that the producers are willing to take chances with source material that is unconventional to a mainstream audience, but this simply wasn't the right story to tell. My suggestion for a movie adaptation would be John Bryne's vastly superior, Man of Steel.

Again, if you liked the source material, you may like this movie. If you didn't like it or havnr't read it, you will likely find the movie confusing. boring and incomplete.

I felt like i was watching this movie in fast forward . WTF

All Star Superman rating = 5/10

i read the source material and still didn't like the movie all that well. But I don't really like Grant Morrison's work.

it is one of the best looking direct to dvd animated films, thanks to the animators using the quitely character designs

i still dont understand what the need for names in movies like this is

i like hendricks as lane....but i much prefer real voice actors for these roles

superman sounds bored throughout the movie....for christs sake dude...you are dying, show a bit of emotion

part of the blame can be placed on whoever was the voice director...but still, i just wish they would stick with real voice actors...and in this economy, those people need the work

The Voice Director is Andrea Romano, who has done excellent work with past DCAU Movies. She can only work with the script she is given.

The real problem is the Source Material which has Supeman "sleep-walking" through the entire story.

I don't know if this was part of the comic, or if it was cut for time, but I was surprised at how little screen time Martha got.

I mean, Clark is dying, and he decides to spend the majority of his time left with Lois.He basically sees Martha at Jonathan's grave, talks to her for a minute and that's it.Hell, he doesn't even let her know he's dying.

Really? You are a man who is dying, and you don't even tell the woman who raised you?The person you've known the longest in the world? You don't won't to spend any time with her or any of your other friends?

I could almost understand if she had been his wife for several years, but it seems like they didn't even get together until he told her he was Superman.

I hate to admit this. But I pretty much agree. This is the weakest of Timm's DCAU productions. Real weak.

Don't trust reality. After all, it's only a collective hunch.

I agree with the OP. Animation was pretty good, but the extra plot lines really took away from the main story. They went from one scene to another so fast that I thought my DVD player had skipped a whole scene. I felt like I was watching three different movies.

There is one secondary plot line in particular where Superman had absolutely no effect on the outcome. Whether he was present or not the situation would have played out exactly the same. What is even odder is the plot line had absolutely nothing to do with the main story line either. Yet the movie devoted more than 10 minutes to to it.
