Blame the dude that did the "art" in the comic.It looked just as bad in that

The shading was what killed it in the comic, for me at least. It's almost as bad as Liefeld-style localized shadow in that the shading has such arbitrary and odd placement that it ends up giving no depth to the feature(s) it is intended to accentuate.

I thought the same thing. but he looks like that in Crisis on 2 Earths as well. So I was already desensitized to it.

It looked like they were trying to animate Tom Welling's giant lips.

Everyone looked almost too pretty, but as far as character designs go, this wasn't the worst.
