How is this not fan fiction?

This movie is so unsubtle about every single one of its elements and themes that it makes the storyline look like some bizarre fan fiction.

Simple. If you're hired by Warner Bros/DC to write it then it's not fan fiction.

Better yet, if you are a respected pro, who produced a highly successful Superman project, which is adapted into an animated feature, you are well beyond "fan."

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

You kind of missed the point. Those elements are supposed to be tributes to Superman's 70+ year legacy.

Can't stop the signal.

Just saying it could've used a little bit of subtlety. The content itself isn't the problem, the way it's put together is. It feels like someone made a pile of tributes, instead of a coherent movie.

reply

Because it was adapted from a 12-issue miniseries. It's sort of a greatest hits of who Superman is and what he represents.

Can't stop the signal.

The comic book series is basically a tribute to Superman. Each issue is a story covering various aspects and quirks of the characters, often combining more modern elements with goofy Silver Age weirdness.

Exactly. ASS isn't really a favourite of mine (I prefer Alan Moore's Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow? as a 'final' Superman story), but the structure of Morrison's story is clever (loved the 'night-time/Winter' trip to the Underworld). Definitely a 'love-letter' to the Silver Age.

"A big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff" The Tenth Doctor explains all.

Sounds like, well, what writers do, esentially make fan fiction.
