Why no 'Daddy?'

I understand the relationship between adoptive children and their respective parents (my wife and her four siblings are all adopted), but I felt it was a bit odd that none of the girls referred to Gru as Dad or Daddy. I COULD ignore this as just the dynamic of their relationship, but at the end of the first movie Margo (the oldest) calls Gru Dad. If nothing else, wouldn't Agnes be calling Gru Dad by now? Anyone else?

I don't recall Margo ever calling Gru dad in the first movie. And I also found it odd that the girls never referred to Gru as their father in Despicable Me 2. I was hoping they would, actually. Would have been cute.

I don't remember the girls calling him "Mr. Gru," but they do call him Gru all the time. And Gru's first name is actually Felonius. Gru is his surname. Gru and the girls acknowledge their relationship at the very least. Haha. In the first movie the girls write on a little piece of paper their names and "dad" to stick on a chair to reserve a seat for Gru at their dance recital. And in the second movie, Gru tells the man in charge of the hero league, or whatever, that he is done with the whole villain lifestyle because he's a father. So there's that. We might hear em say dad in the 3rd one. Happy New Year.

I figure it was like in Karate Kid where Danial keeps referring to his friend and teacher as Mr. Miyagi.
