With the exception of a couple of plot changes towards the end (which I didn't like), the movie stayed pretty close to the books. I think the problem was the whipped by them so fast, I didn't have as much time to appreciate them before they moved on to another scene. Another problem I had is the way they decided to promote this as "mean girls with vampires" which, I think immediately turned a lot of the potential viewers away from the movie. They also downplay some of the darker elements of these books, and I don't know why. And casting was a big issue to me. I didn't like that they decided to change Rose's look in the movie, but I give Zoey credit for bringing the spirit of Rose alive for the most part. Same goes for who they chose to play Christian, but other than that I couldn't get into any of the acting choices they made (don't even get me started on Dimitri! Lol).
I think this series would do better as a television series, but I'd be nervous if they did decide to do it. A lot of my favorite books have been ruined with movie/television adaptations, so I have doubts that it could be done right. But I hope you're enjoying the books. :)
