The animal traps - question

Can anyone tell me, perhaps I missed this part in the movie, what kind of animals they were preparing to trap in those elaborate traps during their hunting season? I know that some of the traps caught the "prey" for the real catch (like that ferret-looking animal that was then placed on the trap). In fact, I recall there were metal clasps and other elaborate traps for these animals but I don't recall which animal they were aiming to hunt.

Also, what were they planning to do with the catch, sell its fur? trade it? are they running a bartering society back in the village?

Don't really know about what kind of animals they hunt, but I guess they utilize the meat and fur for food and clothing and perhaps trade or sell what they don't need in the summer for other stuff which they cannot aquire themselves (like the chainsaws they use or maybe fuel)

they hunt for white fox to subsist by.

I believe they were hunting sable for fur. And I think that ferret-looking animal was, in fact, a sable. That's why the one trapper did not want to use the steel trap -- to keep the fur free of tears and blood.

Sable. The other animals were too small and unprofitable.

Yes, the sable would be the most profitable, and I'm sure would be traded for snow machines, fuel, guns, and other staples. Other animals were caught mostly for their own sustenance, clothing, and to feed the dogs.
Do you remember the part when he smoked the animal out of the log and the dog was whipping the crap out of it? If that was a sable, I'm surprised he let the dog attack it so.
