So Barry who is gay is stated to be with his "boyfriend" who is Robert. Robert is basically the side kick to John and his anti homophobic mission.

Ever watched the Ryan Gosling film where he is a self hating Nazi Jew? It's similar to that. Perhaps he went along with John out of fear. Though as we saw it didn't matter. As John killed members of his Posse.
shareI believe Barry helped Robert escape an abusive household when Robert was 13 years old. They eventually became lovers. It might have been a DVD extra where John tells Robert that he is not gay, but was coerced into the gay relationship with Barry. So Robert has not only anger towards Barry for being used as a sexual object as a child but also gratitude for Barry helping him escape an abusive home. Which would be very confusing for Robert, which would make him angry and John played on that and pushed Robert into taking his anger out on others in a violent way.
