TL;DR- an eccentric game inventor dies and leaves behind an Easter egg in a virtual world. Whoever finds it wins upwards of $240 billion. The movie is about how obsessed the inventor was with the 80's and the story of wade watts, a young man in search of the egg. Throw in a bunch of 80's pop culture with a little bit of oceans 11 style heists and big corporations willing to kill people for knowledge and you've got ready player one.
Look, I'm not doing it justice. Read the book. It will instantly be one of your all time favorites.
The book is not that well-written. But it's certainly entertaining.
