420million

Jesus I'm shocked, I was under the impression this was a small film that didnt really do much at the box office, but it made all that money without a us release, that must be close to an international record

reply

It's very impressive indeed. But I don't know about any records, many films have done better "internationally". (As a European person residing in South America feels weird to call anything non-US international, hah.)

it has to be a record for a French language film at least?

reply

Actually, seems it is. I'm a bit surprised, I was sure Amélie was!

Actually, non other foreign (non-english language) film made as much money (second is Spirited Away and it was dubbed as far as I know in many countries). Pretty impressive for a film that hasn't even got an Oscar nomination.

There are a lot of non-US movies which are good and do very well outside the US. Tells you a lot about the close-mindedness of US movie distributors.

the movie sold 19 millions tickets in france 8,5 millions in germany 2,5 millions in spain and italy 1 million in the uk 1 million in mexico 1,5 millions in japan and korea 1 million in the usa the movie was a hit around the world

reply

I read somewhere recently it was the 2d most watched or sold French movie. I cannot remember what was the first one.
Maybe Americans should remember that a lot of their box offices successes are nothing but remakes of French movies. Sure the US is better for action flicks and big special effects - and kung fu movies, and jackass comedies, and of course, mob and assassins movies. But if you want something more subtle, you will realize that for that, Europe is a lot better.

reply

no only a few french movies were made a remake in the usa and most of those remake were bad i hope with this movie the find right balance to make the remake a artistic and commercial sucess

reply

I'd say another big factor is the their output is mainly English-Language. Hong Kong Cinema and Bollywood are bigger than Hollywood, but their movies aren't predominately in a more 'universal language'.

The movie did great in the US. I saw it in the theater with subtitles I think versions that are dubbed would of taken away from it some for me.

The movie did great in the US.
Relatively speaking, not that well. About $13 million, which would have just about covered its production budget.🐭

reply

For a low budget french film with no advertising, 13 million is good.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already
