Driss leaving

I dont know if i missed something but, why did he leave in t he first place? when his "brother" came to pick him up. He sais he received a letter from unemployment or something with his current address, but nothing else is mentioned. And why was searching for a new job?

reply

I had the same issue.
Felt like missed something.

.
He left because Philippe said he (Driss) couldn't push an invalid around his whole life. Philippe wanted to give him his freedom back, so he could live on his benefits. I think Philippe was also trying to let him get back with his family so he could take care of his brother, etc.

I agree. At the end it explained that Driss and Philippe remained close, and both eventually married and had children. True story.

Philippe wanted to give him his freedom back

So the white master freed his slave?

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

His aunt was finding it tough raising the large family on just her cleaner's income and Driss was in an essentially 24/7 job. He'd made some money and went looking for another care type job, where the hours might not be so demanding.🐭

reply

I think it was because Phillipe had opened himself and showed Driss his vulnerable side and got hurt. Phillipe wanted to feel nothing again and Driss would never let that happen, so he opportunistically let him go.

reply

Because the woman that Phillipe had been corresponding with showed up to take care of him. So Driss left.

reply

They're talking about when he left the job before that. Plus just because she showed up for a date doesn't mean she's going to take care of him.

reply

Well that is what is implied in the film, or Driss wouldn't have left.

reply

I found this odd too. I assumed Philippe was paying him well, plus he sold his artwork. That should have been much more financial help for his family financially compared to his delivery job. Like why not keep him as his caretaker? They both benefit and were happy.
