Morgana in Merlin and Morgan in Camelot

I first loved Morgana in Merlin in the first couple of seasons, until she turned evil. Now I can't stand her. While I don't much like Morgan (Morgana) in Camelot, I prefer to watch her, and I find that I have a little more empathy where she is concerned, but have none towards Morgana in Merlin. (They sure did a work on that Morgana)! I think the actress portraying Morgan(a) in Camelot is a better actress imo, and I hate the "stanky look" that Morgana in Merlin gives all the time when she wants to show her evil side. The Camelot actress doesn't have to do all that and yet you know she is bad nevertheless. Any thoughts?

Can I choose Helen Mirren from Excalibur?

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I really think the role of Morgan (and Eva Green the actress) are better written and played in Camelot vs. Merlin. I don't care for Arthur or Merlin in the Camelot series though.

They both make her Uther's daughter which to me is just stupid.

I'd like to see one take actually have the balls to legitimately depict Incest between Morgan and Arthur, rather some cop out that leaves at least Arthur being ignorant of it. I know the disguise tends to be in the Medieval literature, but these modern takes are willing to make it "Grittier" in so many other areas, Incest in royal families is not at all unheard of, the cop out really isn't needed and just makes the story less interesting.

I don't know about any incest. Why do you feel they should go that route? Was that stated in earlier storylines or books? I don't recall seeing that before, and have no problem with the story as it is.

The incest between Arthur and his sister (although it is with Morgause, not Morgan) is to be found in the medieval Arthurian literature of the 13th century and later. Morgause is usually said to know that Arthur is her brother (or half-brother, depends) while Arthur is ignorant of the relation. Out of this incestuous relationship is born Mordred, while he was just Arthur's nephew in earlier tradition.

To the previous poster who wrote that incest was not unheard of among royals: I beg to differ. I can't think of a single case of married siblings in medieval Western Europe. There are numerous cases of cousins of various degrees marrying, but that is a far cry from brother and sister marrying. Marriage among cousins obeyed very strict rules and was never treated lightly, precisely because the society of the time frowned upon incest. So there's really no "coping out" in the way 13th century writers included the incest motif in the Arthurian legend. There was no way in Hell Arthur could have been glorified as a great king, had he been depicted as having sex with his sister in full knowledge of their parentage.

Wrong. if you look at 99% of the royal families in Europe they are all related

I'll choose Morgane in Merlin tv mini series/movie(1998) with Helena Bonham Carter and the Mists of Avalon Morgaine, Julianna Margulies.

reply

There was insest in Avalon I remember. I have that on DvD. Julianna makes a good role.

The irritating thing is really that the time period of the legend of Arthur, Camelot, the Round Table and so forth is NOT Medieval! The oldest texts we have come from the Medieval period which describes a legend much older.

The Arthurian legend would be set around the 6th century! NOT the medieval times.

As to the Morgana role, I prefer Morgaine in "Mists of Avalon" the most, then a close second [and more evil of course] Morgan of the "Camelot" series, third by a quite a long way would be Morgana from "Excalibur". Morgana in Merlin was trite and is definitely last on my list of all the Morgana adaptations I've seen.

I won't say she was trite, but I didn't like her stanky looks when she wanted to look evil. The actress who plays her does look a lot like Keira Knightly to me though. Not sure if anyone else feels the same. I feel that is why she may have been picked for this role: they wanted a "famous-looking" person. I don't think she did to badly, but in the first season she was so nice and then they turned her into this horrible person.

Going from nice to horrible can be interesting to watch. Too bad the writers didn't give this evolution enough thought ot time. I fear the consequence was that the actress got bored with her part and fell into repetitive smirks and stares because there was little else she could do with what she was given to act. They botched her character - much like the writers on Camelot botched Arthur's character in this show, with even more disappointing results since he was supposed to be the main character. At least Merlin's Morgana wasn't the main character.

Unrelated question to all: which variant of the name do you prefer:
Morgan (spelled Morgane in French with little difference to the pronunciation)
Morgana
Morgaine
Morgian
any other I didn't think of?

she looks nothing like Keira knightly

Of course she does. Put their pictures side by side and then tell me differently.

I'm sorry to say I don't see the resemblance at all either. Different hair, eyes, nose, mouth... they don't smile the same at all (Knightley has a very particular and unforgettable smile that is very much a trademark of hers)... nope, sorry.
