American movies were mostly under 2 hours throughout most of the sound era. It's only been in the last 25 years that they have been affected with "story bloat."
The great director George Roy Hill once said, "If you can't tell your story in one hour fifty minutes you had better be David Lean."
Amen.
I concur

2 1/2 hours as standard?
In other words, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (under two hours), CASABLANCA (under two hours), BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (under two hours), BODY HEAT (under two hours), SPEED (under two hours), GOLDFINGER (under two hours) and THE PRINCESS BRIDE (under two hours) all would have benefited from a longer running time??
You're kidding right? I'm not being facetious here -- this is some kind of a joke, right?
That's funny because most of the movies that were out in December when you posted this were actually rather long. I even recall making a tweet about how I was surprised about how most of the box office for one weekend was made up of 2hr+ films.
