Bana

Possible Spoilers

This movie is okay at best, plot points are rushed, character relationships are rushed, the boxer was a moron and had no back story, which was especially bad considering how much of an impact he has by the end of the film. And the worst thing of all, you should be able to guess the ending of the film within the first 10 minutes, not because it hints at anything, just because it takes the expected route to an expected ending formulated by hollywood. Strange considering its an indie film. Anyway, the only thing good about the film is Bana, I had no idea he was suppose to be the villain and was cheering him on the whole time only to be disappointed when he was taken out by the moron boxer. To sum the film up in one word, Meh.

Jays back story including all the scenes of dialogue lasted maybe 5-7 minutes of the film, which is no where near enough considering he is suppose to be the "hero" of the film. His character was just to generic for me, the film forces him on the audience as a main character when he served no other reason other than being olivia's love interest. It was just badly written, if they would have taken 20-30 minutes to give the character more of a back story before running into olivia, and gave all the characters more dimensions, it would have been much better.

Yeah bana was good .definitely worth watching i like him as and actor .Kate maras character reminded me of the chick from Fargo and the ex boxer character seemed to be thrown in to serve as a sex interest of olivias character.

Where are the real artists? Today it's four-barreled carburetors and that's it.

What plot points or character relationships are rushed its a 95 minute movie and you want to make it longer? You sound like you want to make it more boring or have no clue about story structure. I found the timing and pace of the movie to be spot on. Why not give an example of a movie that has your perfectly timed plot points?

The boxer backstory suited him perfectly. He was B story and added to the theme of the story about fathers and their kids.

People complain about formulaic movies, 95% of movie are all formula. Of course we know how they end, big deal, but its how they tell the story and draw meaning from it. This was a very well told story and a well thought out theme, excellent acting, great cinematography. Way above average in todays film market. imho

That's all well and dandy and you'd have a point if the execution of the material wasn't so lackluster and uninspired. Watching this film gives the viewer the feeling they've seen it all happen before in other films, while offering nothing new whatsoever.

The only bright spot in this half effort is Eric Bana's performance. The only actor in the film with any charisma or genuine effort. A shame his talent was wasted here.

reply

Agreed. This was pretty boring and many of the relationships did not add up. That was one of the worst sex scenes. Bana was good and I really liked his interaction with the mom June.

reply

The sex scene was weird as hell and I felt awkward watching it!

Bana did a good job with the role he had, and while Wilde and the other cast members did a decent job, the faults of this movie mainly lies in direction, not strictly in writing. There's a lot of scenes that, if handled differently, could have had a deeper impact on the story.

All in all it's a decent movie but it could have been a lot better, especially when you consider the talent that lies in this cast!

reply

Bana sucked in this Charlie Hunnam was way better than him.

reply

Bana's performance and the always gorgeous and wonderful Olivia Wilde were the only good things about the movie. It was pretty average

Eric Bana must be in trouble financially to agree to take a part in this. Too bad for such a cool actor. His agent was surely not doing his homework.

But take a look at the bright side he has proved that he could be just as cool with antagonist role, hope it add up to his future CV.

reply

I thought it was an interesting movie, I don't understand all the disdain.

reply

i disagree completely. Bana was alright. he was even becoming a bit of a charicature imo.

I think the pacing was great, if even a little slow, but i understood the need for the pace to feel like pressure was building from all angles. honestly, i don't need relationships spelled out for me in a 20-30 minute segment before the movie actually begins (which is the manhunt and the showdown). grabbing important pieces through the conversations and the characters' actions is better. it leaves interpretation to smart viewers, something that hollywood doesn't believe in anymore.

someone asked for movies with good pacing and character development. i'll offer "Memento" and "Traffic"
