De La Rocha is the best

People never talk about Rage Against The Machine when debating the best lyricist / rapper / mc. ZDLR is without a doubt the best. The first three RATM albums were flawless. Renegades was meh...but I've talked to more people who name songs from that album then I do with people that have listened to Rage Against The Machine. Evil Empire. The Battle of Los Angeles. I guess that's to be expected with a cover album. Which probably exceeds most bands that do cover albums. I prefer De La Rocha's lyrics though. One Day As A Lion. Great EP. He just released a single for a solo album. I think the track is called Digging for Windows.

*beep* that bright *beep*
the spot or the flashlights
we in la ducking both
in the shadows with lead pipes
the days are all night

see if i pay edison
no medicine
these blues ain’t more better when
my fever rise in the jungle
as quick as the price spikes
the days are all night

my future snapped like a rubber band
off my fold on a hand to hand
he drew from his waist
i put two in his roof
and i can still hear his screams
all night

now they ride their portfolios
like rodeos
rise every time my cherry glows
on the end of my cig as
the smoke blows through the bars
and the co’s laugh fades
as he strolls away
says i gotta pay
off that roll away
or its *beep* your visitation days
and i pop off so in solitaire
i dream of offing these fred astaires
and the skin off my fingers tear
we digging for windows here
where the days are all night

this city’s a trap my partner
under the lights of they choppers
bodies tools for they coffers
not worth the cost of our coffins

i stare at a future so toxic
no trust in the dust of a promise
won’t mark the name on a ballot
so they can be free to devour our options
and just like you I’m a target
ill defined by the guap in my pocket
but the stage make figures
as quick as it off em
what marley and pac get?

i put these caps in capitals
leave minds blazed in they capitols
i step with a fury so actual fact
that my offense could be capital

we digging for windows here

In this era where DJs behave
Be paid to be slaves, We raid airwaves
To be sane, And what's raining
From the station, Cash fascination
Like living dead Fed agents
Distract us fast from a disaster's
Wrath for sure, Air war was flooded
Like the 9th ward, On the AM, on the AM
Turn and face them, Hatred and mayhem
Slay them, dangerous I take razor steps
It's the swing from the bling
To the bang on the left
It's the murderous return boom back full strap
Your six that got clipped you can't clap back
With minimal lift and criminal flow
I’m killing them soft And billing them for
Everything stole, And once again
I'm that nail in the wrist
Of they Christmas, Watch me
Make their family a witness

The bastard son I spit non fiction
In exile for awhile now with raw friction
Never be a pawn the boomerang be upon you
I'm like Fela with my heart in Venezuela
It's a world favela so *beep* the novela
I'm out of the cellar with a blade and some cheddar
For the whole new world order you to bow down
To the now sound of slavery this era be
Terrible, terror-filled terrified
Why would we ever let a few white Christian fictions
Shape our tomorrow following them
Cause tomorrow got a gun to it's head

[Hook x2]
The Tyrant's coming
Rising like the dawn of a red sun
If you fear dying then you're already dead
[Verse 2]
I'm in the spirit of Ali Touré

As I target more heads than a priest on ash Wednesday

Paid and hanging you pigs on gold ropes
Have the mic or the heater but you can't hold both
You could snatch one and catch the blast of the other
I'm Chicano soprano high off my pitch ammo
I'm a put a crack in your diamond pimp cup
So vest up I'm your cross turned right side up
I'm the press leak that downed you aide
I'm the orange jump suit that's tailor made
I'm the crescent, the sickle, so sharp the blade
I'm the flick of the shank that opened your veins
I'm the dusk, I'm the frightening calm
I'm a hole in the pipeline I'm a road side bomb

[Hook x2]
The Tyrant's coming
Rising like the dawn of a red sun
If you fear dying then you're already dead

And what was the crime Christ was crucified for? Anyone? Anyone?

Sedition. Can you tell me what sedition means?

se·di·tion

synonyms: rabble-rousing, incitement to rebel, subversion, troublemaking, provocation; rebellion, insurrection, mutiny, insurgence, civil disorder

Crucifixion was a Roman form of execution reserved purely for non-Roman citizens as punishment for three crimes: attempted escape from slavery, brigandage or piracy and sedition against the Roman Empire. Jesus was not an escaped slave and was not a brigand or pirate. So this means he was seen by Pilate as a rebel against the Empire.

Christians often claim that Jesus' message was not in any way political and that Jesus was not a political Messiah, sticking to the gospel line that the wicked Jewish leaders forced a weak and reluctant Pilate into executing Jesus for sedition when he was totally innocent of this charge. But the message Jesus preached did have a political dimension, despite deliberate attempts by the gospel writers to play it down. Jesus taught that God was soon going to intervene in the world, sweep away the enemies of Israel, judge the living and the dead and restore the world to past perfection before ruling it through his Anointed One, the Messiah.

Pilate and the Romans had little understanding of or interest in the theology behind this apocalyptic preaching, but they knew it involved the overthrow of Roman rule. And that was enough to get someone preaching this crucified, especially if he did so in Jerusalem at the height of Passover and started riots in the Temple while doing so.
