So yeah I rewatched this movie last night and I realized something about the plot and timeline. At some point in the Obama administration the first Kaiju attacked. We know this because he was seen on tv at the beginning of the movie addressing the attack. It was referenced that it was 2017 when the main character's brother was killed and shortly thereafter both Sydney and the US decided to start building a wall to keep the Kaiju out. Naturally this didn't work due to it being a stupid plan, not unlike the Donald's plan.
Even more compelling is that the movie starts with the idea that people used to look to the stars for alien life when they should have been looking to the seas. Clearly the movie was predicting a Trump presidency as well as what his wall would eventually be used for.

That is to say that the reason for the wall would be shifted from illegal aliens to alien life.

I think Trump is a Kaiju, possibly in a infant form or it is waiting to mutate into it's final form when the nation most able to deal with it loses it's mind and puts it in power!
