Those two wacky scientiests didn't fit the tone

I got the impression those two plucky comic relieves were forced onto the director to not lose the PG-13 crowd. Unfortunately this comedic element did not work well with the darker tone of the rest of the movie. Really cheapened the experience. I am pretty sure if del Toro had full creative control over this project, the scientist part would panned out differently.

This movie really wasn't that dark even without the scientists. It was a fun popcorn flick.

The movie really wasn't all that dark. The premise might be, but there was still an air of fun and levity.

I thought they were cute. Annoying, but cute.
