shareIt's hard to not over-analyze when we know that Del Toro is capable of movies like Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2. If someone else made this (like Roland Emmerich), I'd sit back with my feet up and enjoy. On that level, I agree with you. I just expect more now from Del Toro (for better or worse).
shareI liked this, love Hellboy and was VERY underwhelmed by Pan's Labyrinth.
I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
Del Toro accomplished exactly what he wanted to do with this film: make a big blow out love letter to the Toho films and tokusatsu shows of his youth. To most fans of those particular niche genres, this movie knocked it out of the park and then some. If you're not a fan of of the toku, mecha or kaiju genres, and watched it just for Del Toro as a director, this isn't necessarily going to be the film for you.
It's the exact same thing with Crimson Peak. As a gothic horror film, it's fantastic, yet many people felt that it was underwhelming as a Del Toro film. Talk about missing the point.
Media doesn't exist in a vacuum. With any movie, any analysis should be done within the context of its genre(s) to be fair to what it was trying to accomplish. Context and genre matters, and this is especially true with niche genres like toku of gothic horror.
... pretty much what i had thought of it. a homage to the japanese pop cultures influences of mecha, and giant monsters .
well, at least london and new york got spared this time around.
