Actually, it was a horse. Though, some have said that it probably should've been a buffalo because it's a bigger animal that can provide more heat with its fur and body fat to the inhabitant.

But he had to be running away from those guys on a horse, not a buffalo because he took a horse from them, and becasue a buffalo won't let you ride him, at least not very fast.
